Buckeye Gets Better Every Breath He Takes

Peter Yoon
September 10, 2006

You might say Ohio State receiver Anthony Gonzalez had a breakthrough performance Saturday night in the Buckeyes' 24-7 victory over Texas, but Gonzalez breaks through just about every day.

Through the door of the tent in which he sleeps, that is.

Gonzalez, who set career high Saturday with eight catches and 142 yards, has what's called a hypoxic altitude simulation training system ? a plastic chamber ? covering his bed.

The chamber simulates living at an altitude of 8,000 feet by using a device that reduces the percentage of oxygen from 20.9 to 13. The idea is to increase the number of red blood cells, which helps increase endurance and shorten recovery time.

The tents, which cost about $5,000, have been used by endurance athletes for years.

After Saturday night, there might be a line of football players at the hypoxic altitude simulator store, but not so fast.

The World Anti-Doping Agency is considering adding the tents to its prohibited list in 2007, which means the NCAA would probably follow suit.

Gonzalez Plays 'Functional Game' Vs. Texas.......

Mark May calls Gonzo a role player for Ohio State! I guess he missed most of our games last year. :wink2:
May is a 1st. class TOOL! Has and never will give any Buckeye the props that they deserve! I expect this now.
But, I'll never expect to see another Gonzo. (will be surprised and pleased if I do..) The kid showed up a poised and mature Buck from the beginning! Very rare these days. Has displayed CLASS from day 1! As a frosh. following the '04 GAME, stood outside the WHAC, signed kids autographs, and probably spent 15-20 minutes just talking with them. Maintains a soft - spoken attitude and ALWAYS gives 100 percent! What an honor it is to watch these kids develop! :oh: :io:

Gozalez proves to be more than just a #2 WR, he is a solid 1B to Ginn's 1A. Gonzo probably has some fo the surest hands I have seen, and will continue to grow into a great WR this year and next, before heading the the NFL.

Role players don't make 8 catches for 142 yards and a TD in a 1 vs. 2 game.
They do when the defense is keying on Smith, Ginn, and the running game....

Being a "role player" is not a bad thing! Every football team needs a dozen or two....

i'm going to use one of your lines, but i guarantfuckingtee that TG2 comes back next year. 1) the WR class in '07 is deep as hell, and 2) TG1 says so.
I doubt he does, but I hope you're right...

Some of the best players ever started out as "role" players...

Really? Alvin Harper was a great role player...so was Scotty Pippen, John Taylor, and finally Harry Carson played his role to Canton.

Gonzo being a role player is not a crack on him or his ability...it is a testament to his ability to perfectly fill a void on this offense.

Without a doubt, Gonzo is Troy's go-to guy. When its on the line and we need a first down or touchdown Gonzo gets it done every time. Teddy is the nail in the coffin. Gonzo is the undertaker!
