It ain't easy, bein' cheesy.
To go along with the NY Transit strike thread:

How many of you would go on strike from your job over wage/benefits issues like this?

I would not. I don't think it's right, and in some cases it's illegal. If you don't like what you're getting, then you should quit and go get something better.

No way.

Even though I've seen school districts fractured (Groveport Madison) b/c of crossing the picket line, I would owe it to my students to teach them no matter what.

At Groveport, teachers stood outside the classroom windows and chanted to disrupt the classrooms and painted "Scabs" on the side of school busses that hauled teachers in from other areas to sub.

Some people down there still eat in separate lunchrooms b/c of this labor issue.

Really sad.

Unions have outlived them selves and should be given an appropriate burial.

doesn't actually apply to me... but times are tough... you may win the battle but lose the war...

pay raises often lead to lay offs... the world is not readily accepting higher prices.. if any alternatives exist... ask GM and Ford... one out of 7 jobs in the USA are involved in the automotive industry...

take the NY strike for example... they are asking for huge increases in a number of areas.. if they get it... someone has to pay it... and those transportation systems are so vital to many that don't make the monster Manhattan salaries you normally assume... this will hurt the passengers greatly...

medical and retirement benefits are taking hits everywhere... it's just the tip of what I think will be a given in the next decade...

WTF??? Twice in one day I agree with the Ramblings of the 'Thump'. When I worked in R&D I would go to a steel mill and watch 3 people a shift do a one man job. The would rotate when they had to watch someting the others would sleep, play cards, or just sit around and BS. Yet we wonder why we can not compete for a lot of mfg'd goods... Unreal!!!

I would only go on strike if I didn't care if I lost the job, because that will most likely be the outcome. If I didn't care if I had it to begin with, why fight for it?

The way I look at it is this: If you don't like your job, you can either hit the bricks and find another one or be thankful you have any job and deal with it the way it is. Either way, shut the fuck up.

Agreed. We aren't talking about coal miners working 16 hour days to get paid $3 worth of mine scrip, spendable only at the mine owner's shop, where the prices are twice what they should be. A lot of people nowadays don't seem to have a clue how easy they have it.

At one point, some guy (in Delaware, OH I think) tried to form a union for pizza delivery drivers. WTF! You get paid damn well to do your job, which mostly involves driving around in your car, listening to the radio. Jeebus!!!! This shit isn't back-breaking labor!!!

Exactly... if yuo are not getting paid more, its probably because you either aren't worth more, or you are overqualified.

Either way...

Get a new job.

(The best way to determine if you are underpaid is to see if someone else will pay you more... if not, you are likely expereincing delusions of granduer.)

On the Transit workers... I think that some leeway should be given to Government sanctioned Monopolies... (ie, I assume they can't go work for the "other" New York bus service.) As my free Labor Market scenario doesnt' exaclty apply... same with teachers, etc.

Ergo - why we buy our steel from China now. The steel workers union sure outsmarted the mills......they are all closed now........
