Cup was tops on TV

The World Cup final was television's most watched sports event in 2006, drawing more than twice as many viewers as any other program, according to a report by Initiative Worldwide.

An average of 260 million people tuned in to see Italy defeat France. More than 600 million viewers watched some part of the Berlin match.

The Super Bowl was second. The opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Torino took third spot.

Soccer is increasing its global domination, Initiative said, citing a 14 percent increase in the World Cup's global live audience compared with 2002. This year's event had a cumulative 5.9 billion audience in 54 countries, of which 41 percent were women.

its sad that Zidane will be remembered more for that Headbutt than any other moment in his career. Especially considering that most Americans never knew who he was in the first place thats the only way they'll ever remember him. Also sad because he played better than anyone during the knockout stages of the world cup. One of the greatest players to ever play the game, but what a sad way to end his illustrious career.
