The England vs Ecuador match was relatively free of incident - almost vacuously so.

By contrast, the match between Portugal and Holland was over-supplied with everything but discipline. A total of 16 yellow cards were issued, and there were 4 ejections from the game. The first equals the record previously set by the Cameroon vs Germany game in 2002. The second sets a new (low) record for number of ejections.

All of this happens because of unbelievably poor refereeing. Early in the game a very cynical foul by Bronckhorst on Portugal's striker Ronaldo goes punished with only a yellow card - when it was clearly a sending off offense. Studs up, into Ronaldo's thigh - clear intent to injure - which Bronckhorst accomplished, Ronaldo was gone from the game within the first half. You knew then that the ref had given up his grip on the game.
Moments of sheer farcical tragi-comedy followed. One fracas draws the ref's attention, and while he dealing out the yellow plastic more pushing shoving and theatrics is happening behind his back. Later Figo play-acts to draw the foul call on Bronckhorst that finally gets him his ejection from the match. But, because of this farce Portugal, who held on to win 1-0, will be severely depleted when they face England in the Quarter Finals. Their two player ejections Costinha and Deco will take no part in that contest, neither is it likely that Ronaldo will play. He suffered the type of deep bruise, with a laceration, that really only gets to 100% with time. Should he see the field on July 1, he will be far from fully fit.
The Russian referee should not ever be given the opportunity to officiate another game at the International level. He was, in a word, incompetent. His inactions and then later over-reactions, may have cost Portugal the opportunity to progress in this tournament.
Scandalous, surreal and compelling theater.

i have been down here in Ecuador for the past few weeks and i have seen both the highs and lows experienced around the world with soccer.

first they beat Costa Rica 3-0 and the whole country (well i am in quito the capital) stopped and celebrated. it also meant that they would be going to the second round. literally nobody worked (ok a few people did) during the match. great great atmosphere.

then there was the match yesterday. again nobody worked and people were going crazy before the game. the streets were literally empty for the game, in the newspaper this morning they had pictures of empty streets during the game. up until beckham scored his ¨golaso¨you could feel the excitement in the air. after the game it was pretty down, but the one thing i noticed the most and apprciated the most was how much they thanked the team.

the rest of the day on the tv stations they had commercials with both the good and bad of the world cup for them and it said ¨gracias seleccion¨. this was also the headline of the newspaper this morning. the way they go about things is totally different and the culture is a complete 180 from us, trust me. but seeing this really took me. they were happy just to have had a team and to have played. obviously they wanted more, but being there meant a lot.

i will say this though, that team was really young and they have two really young stars, valencia (20) and lara (19) who are going to be stars in the near future. i look for them to be just as strong in 2010 in South Africa.

I would not have awarded a PK in the Italy-Australia game. And I believe the fact that the game was scoreless, and seconds away from OT is a legitimate factor in the decsion.

Tomorrow's games should be better. Brazil-Ghana will hopefully look like a track meet, and Spain-France is an interesting matchup.
