Quinshon Judkins and Chip Kelly are in Columbus now, so what does that mean for Henderson as he enters his final season.
Every day from now until the start of the season, Land-Grant Holy Land is highlighting Ohio State football players that you should be watching this season. Check out all of our ”Player to Watch” articles to get ready for the season opener against Akron.
One of the most talked about and anticipated positions to watch this season will be the running back room. Between the arrival of Quinshon Judkins and Chip Kelly and the departures of Miyan Williams, Chip Trayanum, and Dallan Hayden, the one consistent is senior TreVeyon Henderson.
In Henderson’s three seasons in Columbus, he has played 31 games with 29 starts and recorded 446 carries for 2,745 yards and 32 touchdowns. He also has recorded 50 catches for 569 yards and five touchdowns.
His freshman season was nothing short of spectacular, running for 1,248 yards on 183 carries and 15 touchdowns, adding 27 catches for 312 yards and four touchdowns.
Although injuries hampered his sophomore season, he still played in eight games, gaining 571 yards on 107 attempts and six touchdowns.
Then, last year was a comeback season, even though he was injured as well. He played in ten games, running for 926 yards on 156 carries and 11 touchdowns. He was named First Team All-Conference last season.
Now, Henderson is back in Columbus, joining the numerous players who were expected to enter the NFL draft last season but returned for one last season as a Buckeye in hopes of beating Michigan, winning a Big Ten title, and winning a national championship.
However, it will be interesting to see what Henderson’s role is, how the reps are split between new Ole Miss transfer Quinshon Judkins and Henderson, and how the offense will look under Chip Kelly’s first season, who was brought in after Bill O’Brien left.
Also, Henderson will serve as a captain this season, along with Cody Simon, Emeka Egbuka, and Jack Sawyer.
“The great news is we have a great group of leaders,” Head coach Ryan Day said when the captains were announced. “Just because you are not a captain doesn’t mean you’re not a leader. You’re still a leader. Leadership is earned and a lot of you guys have earned leadership. There are a lot of captains on this team. The players did a great job voting.”
According to the Ohio State Athletics site, Henderson is a two-time Academic all-Big Ten honoree and OSU Scholar-Athlete majoring in the sports industry, enters the 2024 season ranked 15th in school history in career rushing yards and is just 808 yards from Top 5 status among Buckeyes.
He ranks in a tie for eighth in Ohio State history (with Tim Spencer and Hopalong Cassady) with 37 touchdowns scored and is 21 touchdowns away from Pete Johnson’s 48-year-old school record of 58 touchdowns.
TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins are two of the best running backs in the conference and the country.
Henderson was named to the AP Preseason Second Team All-American team and is expected to produce at a high level this season. Judkins brings in another wrinkle since he is going to get a lot of carries as well, and transfer quarterback Will Howard is also capable of using his legs, so he will likely get some carries as well.
However, Henderson is still the main guy in the backfield as a captain and is now a four-year starter. Having Judkins in the backfield now will help take a key portion of the workload off of Henderson and hopefully help him stay healthy in his final season. But I would expect Henderson to still be the RB1 in this offense.
Ryan Day has said multiple times that both players were excited to share the backfield, and that dynamic could be nightmare fuel for the rest of college football.
