Wireless routers and online gaming.....

I'm not that savvy when it comes to this kind of stuff, but can the wireless router you use affect the speed in you online gaming experience? I've noticed when I'm playing Call of Duty, I'll come around a corner and I can't even get a shot off before a guy has killed me. Then when I watch the kill cam back, he's seen me come around the corner like 1 or 2 seconds before I even saw him.


Is this a router issue? I have Road Runner through Time Warner, so it's not like I have a dial up or something.


The router I have is:

LINKSYS Wireless-G
2.4 GHz w/ Speed Booster



thoughts or suggestions?

the router is in the 1st floor den, and the PS3 is in the master bedroom on the 2nd floor. Fairly close to being right above the router. I usually play without disconnecting my laptop from the wireless. I did that today and noticed a slight improvement. That was probably one of the issues.

The PS3 has a notoriously poor wifi antenna. It will connect and show full signal but performs poorly. I gave up on it entirely three years ago. I tried a powerline adapter and even though I was in a new house with good electric grid, the two hubs were too far apart to be impactful.

I went from a 2wire with AT&T to a Vizio simultaneous dual band and now am AirPort Extreme. They all have the same success (lack thereof) with the PS3. Streaming video over wifi is impossible unless your in the next room, where you can almost run an Ethernet wire.

The amount of data used for online gaming is minimal so the reduction in max bandwidth should not be a problem (especially since I am sure your wireless bandwidth is higher than your internet speed), and the extra lag from a wireless router is minimal. As long as you have a constant connection (which it sounds like you do) and you are not saturating your internet with other downloads, it won't have any real noticeable affect. You just need to up your game.
