Anyone know anything about these things?

The laptop won't pick up the wireless signal...what am I missing?

Note: Talk in basics...Im clueless about this stuff.
Are there any wires? It's not supposed to have any....

Actually, I had to call the folks at Lynksys to set my router up correctly. They were helpful, for what it's worth. Although, it could well be it's not your router that's the problem. Do you know you're wireless card in the laptop is working properly?

Here is the thing...it works fine at her house. She brought it over here to do grad work and now the laptop won't pick up the signal. I connected ethernet from modem to router and router to desktop. Desktop is fine with connectivity but Laptop is not getting much...

What am I doing wrong?

The only thing I can think of is first to Cycle Power, second would be to login and check the SSID of the wireless network and see if you can manually add it, you may want to change the wireless channel too. That's the basics, if the unit works I can't see any reason why it wouldn't be able to grab the network.

Is there something that could be blocking the signal or are you too far away? If the desktop works, and all you did was unplug it to move it there really isn't a good reason for it not to work. Make sure wireless is still enabled on the laptop. If it won't connect at all you can try hard coding the SSID (network name) into Windows XP. View Available Wireless networks/Change Advanced settings. Once you're in there you can clear out he memory of any other networks it's been on and see if that has anything to do with it. It would be good if you to limit this to the laptop or the router. Do you have any other wireless shit?

This laptop has been used with this router before I'm assuming from your post?

Does the laptop "see" the signal (network)? SSID?

May be one of the security settings also. You can set up routers to only allow a set number of computers on the network (a security feature that restricts the number of IP's it will assign). If you plugged in the desktop first, it would have been assigned it's IP so the router must be set up to allow more than one IP (computer) on the network at a time.

The only thing I can think of is there is a wireless ap on the same channel, if the laptop has worked on this AP in a different environment. Do a search, look at the other available wirless networks and make note of thier channel (look at their properties) then connect via the web interface to the AP/Router at your house and look at the wireless settings for a conflict.

Shit, I thought that you were talking about a battery operated one of these (if they even have them) which would also be a "wireless router".
