Wireless internet problem

What are the reasons that an XP computer would be able to see the wireless network but be unable to connect and but fail to register signal strength or get site survey information inside the softeware for the Belkin wireless USB adapter?

Thanks for the info, I guess I should've been more clear. The router and adapter were working just fine until tonight. I know it's not the router because I have another computer hooked up via wireless and it's having no problems (that's what I'm posting on). When I try to let Windows repair the connection (right-click, repair) it goes until it cannot connect to the network and I get the contact the admin message. I did find a registry issues (via Spybot) and two virii (via Avast). Would reinstalling Windows take care of it?

If it is spyware related, sure would. As long as it's not a hardware problem with the adapter itself. Try this first.

Start, Run
Type in netsh dump

I believe I have another possible fix that I can link you to if that doesnt clear it up. Let me see if I can find it.

Here it is:

Basically repairs winsock dll's, rebuilds tcp/ip stack, etc. You may want to try resetting your router and starting from scratch as well though, because I have seen stranger things happen.

Still no dice. Tried both those solutions, downloaded multiple FREE reisgistry repair utilities and still not it. I did hardwire it to the router and it works A-OK. I'm not sure what that means, but at least she can keep wokring while I try to solve the problem. I guess I'll have to make the girlfriend actually find her XP disks and try the reinstall. Thanks for all your help... if anything else comes to you, I'd love to hear it.
