Wireless internet issues...NEED HELP

rocketman

flying low
Man, this is starting to get me livid.

We move into our apartment on campus and set up our wireless lan so all 4 of us can have internet. At first it was working great, but then I realized it disconnects me from the internet (not the network) every so often. The signal strength stays the same (very good to excellent signal) and never gets disconnected (no red "x" on the connection icon). Today it has been REALLY often (every 30 seconds to 5 minutes). There are about 9 other networks in the area that I can detect with my Airlink MIMO XR adaptor (thing is a beast, has three antennas), and it detects our network strongest of them all, like it should. My other 3 roommates dont have any problems with their internet disconnecting - but I'm getting it all the time it seems. Right now I'm connected to someones unprotected wireless network with a weak signal, and I haven't had ANY problems with losing the internet. That just pisses me off. I PAY for Road Runner and I can't even connect to it reliably, while I'm stealing someone elses internet and it works perfectly fine! Is there any issues known issues with my card? If this problem is due to interference, or if it's a Road Runner problem, why don't my other roommates get it? I'm about ready to hit up MicroCenter and get a big-ass ethernet cable and run a wire from the cable modem up to my room!

Check your windows wireless network settings.
There is an option to have windows automatically configure/connect, turn that off, you should be fine.
Also, go into your list of preferred networks and make sure the one you want is the only one listed

No that sounds like it's something with your wireless card to me. See if you can find a newer driver for it maybe?

Also, make sure your windows power saving settings are turned off. Cause if not, windows will turn off the wireless card to save power after so long.

If your roomates dont get it, it's not a road runner problem. Gotta be something specific to your card. This may sound like a dumbass question, but do you leave your machine running all the time? If so, give it a reboot, and see if the problem stops.

Yeah, I've tried disabling WZC and using the utility that came with the card but neither is doing the trick. I reinstalled the drivers without the utility that came with the card and it seems to be doing better (using only WZC). It still disconnects, but every 30 minutes to an hour now.

After some more testing it looks like the card disconnects from the entire network (not just the internet), so it can't be an RR issue. I heard if I disable IEEE 802.x Authentication, that my problem will go away, but I don't know how to do that.

What power saving features are you talking about? Is this specific to the wifi card? I turn my computer off every night so I don't think that's the issue.

Power saving as in, right click on desktop, go to properties, under the screen saver tab. Power button at the bottom. Believe it or not, that could be causing it to do that.

What kind of card is it? PCI? PCMCIA? USB?

P4C800-E motherboard

Good board. I have a machine with the P4P800 Deluxe in it.

Anyway, no I really dont see that being a problem. Has to be something specific to the card. Drivers, firmware, etc. It may be too much of a pain in the balls, but could you try a different card in your machine just to be sure? Might even wanna switch PCI slots, although I dont see a large chance of that helping.
