Go Buckeyes!
Staff member
  • The Buckeyes continue their successful season with 5 more games in Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven, Florida and then a big one in Coral Gables. The opponents this time around are Big 10 foe Indiana, Army, Hartford and Rollins.

Friday March 20th 10:00 AM Indiana

The Buckeyes face the Hoosiers for the first time this season in Winter Haven in what I think will be a non-conference game. IU currently sits at 6-9 going into this weekend's action.

Saturday March 21st 1:00 PM and 3:30 PM (DH) Army

The Black Knights of the United States Military Academy (West Point) will play the Buckeyes in a Double-header on Saturday. Army is at 5-6 right now with wins over Ohio U, Sacred Heart and Central Florida.

Sunday March 22nd 11:00 AM Hartford

A matchup with the Hartford University Hawks is in store for the Buckeyes on Sunday. The Hawks are currently 1-5 after all 4 games scheduled for their home stadium in Connecticut in March were inexplicably cancelled due to bad weather.

Monday, March 23rd 1:30 PM Rollins

The Rollins College Tars (not making that up) wind up the week's Winter Haven portion of the schedule. The Tars are currently 12-9 on the season after a thrilling come-from-behind 12-11 victory over Bridgeport.

The extended Spring Break Weekend weekend concludes with what could be the best non-conference game on OSU's slate: the Miami Hurricanes. The game with be in Coral Gables, Florida.

Tuesday, March 24th 6:00 PM Miami (FL)

The Hurricanes are currently ranked 4th in the Nation by the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association. Miami is 14-3 (5-1 ACC) on the season, including a 3-0 loss to Rhode Island, a team that also beat Ohio State 8-6. They are truly one of the powerhouse programs in College Baseball and a perennial contender for the College World Series. Per the Wikipedia entry: "Since 1973, the program has been one of college baseball's elite, winning four national championships (1982, 1985, 1999, 2001) and advancing to the NCAA regionals a record 36 consecutive years." This game could show where the Ohio State program is in relation to the elites in the world of College Baseball.

Alex Wimmers once again was excellent

    he pitched a complete game shutout (9 IP 5 H 0 R 0 BB 14 K)

to lead Ohio State to a 2-0 win over Indiana

    official site

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Alex Wimmers pitched his second consecutive gem, going the distance, striking out 14 and not walking a batter, and Ohio State scored twice in the seventh inning for a 2-0 win over Indiana Friday at Chain of Lakes Field. The win, in a wonderfully pitched ball game by both teams that did not feature an extra base hit, was Ohio State’s sixth consecutive and improved its record to 14-2. Indiana drops to 7-12.

“A great effort by Wimmers,” Ohio State coach Bob Todd said after the game. “He really pitched well and then he got stronger once we were able to give him the lead.”

One week after striking out 15 Pitt Panthers and earning a “Louisville Slugger” Player of the Week award, Wimmers was even more dominant as he allowed only five singles to an Indiana team that was hitting .338 overall, second in the Big Ten to Ohio State’s .357 average entering the game. His 9.0 scoreless innings lowered his earned run average to 1.85 on the season and his record improves to a perfect, 4-0.

Wimmers is a complete badass! Enjoy him now though because he wont be wearing a Buckeye uniform after this season. Unfortunately, there's way to much of that going around these days. :(

Back to back Louisville Slugger awards? If he got it last week I dont see why not since this outing was even better.

BASE: Ohio State Defeats Army Twice; Now 16-2

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. ? No. 22 Ohio State defeated Army twice Saturday at Chain of Lakes Field, 3-1 and 8-4, to improve to 16-2 on the season and extend its winning streak to eight games. Army, which had come into the day a winner of four consecutive games, drops to 6-8 overall.
A five-run third inning broke a 3-all tie in the nightcap and gave the Buckeyes a comfortable, five-run cushion, 8-3. The big inning included four hits and two Cadet errors. Michael Stephens and Ryan Dew each singled and scored in the inning and Cory Rupert walked and scored. All three scored on the big hit of the inning: Matt Streng?s bases-loaded triple, his third of the year, down the right field line........

Major League Baseball Draft - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Players at four-year colleges are eligible after completing their junior years, or after their twenty-first birthdays. The exception to this is Division III schools, where players can be drafted before their junior year.

Alex is a true Sophomore so he will be back next season (not sure about his age though but I doubt he will meet the age requirement this year)

BASE: No. 22 Buckeyes Improve to 17-2 - The Ohio State Buckeyes Official Athletics Site - OhioStateBuckeyes.com
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The No. 22 Ohio State baseball team won its ninth consecutive game with a 9-8 win over Hartford Sunday at Chain of Lakes Field. The win improved the team’s record to 17-2 on the season. Hartford drops to 1-10.

Ohio State starting pitcher Ross Oltorik, a true freshman, pitched a career-long 5.0 innings, allowing just one run off six hits to record his initial collegiate win against no losses. He struck out a career-best five batters and walked three in his best performance to date as a Buckeye.

Oltorik had a couple of one-two-three innings, including striking out the side in the fourth, and he successfully got himself through a couple of tight situations. In the second inning with Ohio State up 2-0, Oltorik got through a bases loaded with nobody out pinch with a fly ball and a thank-you-very-much one-two-three double play with Oltorik fielding a one-hopper and throwing to Dan Burkhart for the force at home. Burkhart then threw to first to get the batter.

In the fifth inning, Oltorik faced a bases loaded with one out exam. He passed this test with flying colors as well, getting back-to-back strikeouts of the four and five hitters and fist-pumping all the way to the bench at the end of the inning to close the scorebook on his first collegiate win.

BASE: Rollins Snaps OSU Win Streak, 4-1 - The Ohio State Buckeyes Official Athletics Site - OhioStateBuckeyes.com
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The No. 16 Ohio State baseball team had its nine-game winning streaked snapped, 4-1, Monday afternoon against Rollins College. The Buckeyes, who moved up to No. 16 in this week’s Collegiate Baseball rankings, will carry a 17-3 record into its Tuesday night contest at No. 6 Miami. Rollins improved to 18-12 on the year.

Two Tars’ pitchers – starter Marc Hewett and Robbie Pagano – held the Buckeye bats in check by giving up just five hits with the only run scored on a Dan Burkhart single in the fourth inning. Hewett, who left the game at the start of the seventh inning due to a leg cramp, improved to 3-1 with the win. Pagano recorded his first save of the year.

Sadly, Rollins College is the best team we have played this year

I have no idea who will pitch for the bucks vs Miami. I say Wimmers, Rucinski, Best, and Hale all throw some.. We cant get too crazy with our pitching..B10 play starts friday.

Miami is one of those teams that has 12 or so good pitchers. Their pitching depth is as good as it gets, and we could see any number of them tomorrow.
