Has anyone obtained the Windows 10 update via the Microsoft website? It was released today for download and just requires a simple executable that runs, reboots, and updates your Windows 7/8 PC for free. Eventually they will roll it out via Windows Update but it's not ready for production release at this time.

If anyone does it let me know how it goes. I have three devices at home I want to eventually upgrade (Desktop, HTPC, and Laptop).

Do you have windows 8? You could always Hyper-V it to test before committing your primary partition to the upgrade.

Watching this thread as I have the upgrade reservation notification at the bottom of my desktop. I'm relatively pleased with 7. But I'm thinking about waiting until after the 29th and the true reviews come in to determine whether I want to upgrade. If it will make my older PC run better, then I may just have to jump.

Would someone provide an update on their W10 experience? is a real version (not Beta) out there yet?
I highly suspect my sys (W7 Pro) is getting banged around by Windows updates
Last week my external Dell monitor (this is a Lenovo laptop) started automatically going into power save mode... on for 3 sec.. and goes to black
Web implicates drivers and to call Dell for files.. naturally Dell says it's Lenovo's issue
Did all the diagnostics to check my graphics card & driver but sys says they're fine...
At about the same time, my speaker volume seems to be heavily scaled back.. max now is equal to maybe 6 before...
and other procedures are being hampered by system file duplication

Tempted to take the dive for W10 to see if I can leap out of this spiral
but I no longer have that desire to live with guinea pig exerience

Have a Lenovo laptop with 2 dell externals.. i'm gonna go with Dell... Lenovo's graphics drivers are shitty. You might find out the info on your card and go to AMD/Nvidia/Intel's website and get the latest....

Anyone ever had the battery on the motherboard go

It's very common. Most computers use a CR2032 lithium battery which eventually needs replaced. Easiest way to diagnose is to determine if your issues (usually lost CPU & RAM settings, system clock) occurs after a complete power off, disconnect from power source, then reconnect and power on. Most modern computers draw discrete power even when off, so it's really only verifiable by unplugging from AC power for a few seconds then plugging back in.

That said, your monitor issue sounds like something else. A dead mobo battery won't have any bearing on the monitor going into power save mode or volume settings. Those types of things are not stored in the BIOS/CMOS, that's OS-level and persistent with storage on the hard drive.

I've heard of this from happening and it should be fairly easy to replace. What model of computer do you have?..
I have a ThinkPad W520.. which is a bit cumbersome in taking apart to get to the motherboard and to add memory

I still wonder if it's some setting I screwed up while trying to be so techy
I've done everything.. from display to power settings
or could be related to other issues that started after a windows update
that's why I was wondering if I should try out W10

if I do change the battery, I may consider upgrading the video card
