Why is this news?: Ohio State bound for the Rose Bowl?, Chris Ash will be a head coach, it's just a matter of when

Cleveland.com's Doug Lesmerises spoke with Scott Jenkins, the Chair of the Rose Bowl Management Committee, over who would make the Rose Bowl, Ohio State, or the loser of the Rose Bowl. Now while Ohio State fans all hope that Ohio State can somehow manage to make it into the College Football Playoff and give us another memorable couple of games, right now this seems to be much more realistic for the Buckeyes.
Jenkins told Lesmerises that he spoke to both AD's of Iowa and Ohio State to discuss the selection process, where the ADs also allegedly gave their cases for their programs. He also points out two things that seem undeniable. If Michigan State loses, they hold an upper hand on Ohio State based on a head to head matchup. Also, the process will really come down to who is ranked higher in the College Football Playoff come the final rankings. Right now, there are endless scenarios for Ohio State, and unfortunately there is nothing that they can control. Hopefully the right dominos fall for the Bucks.

In case you haven't heard, Chris Ash is drawing interest for certain head coaching openings. He isn't the first Ohio State assistant under Urban Meyer to draw attention and praise, and it should be no surprise to anybody to see him jet for a head coaching position. Ash has been with the Buckeyes since 2014, and whenever you win a national title, your assistants are sure to draw extra attention.
Lesmerises points out in his article that Ash even said it himself when he first came to Ohio State that he wanted the opportunity to become a head coach. Ash has drawn interest from Rutgers and Syracuse, but has recently pulled his name out of consideration for the Syracuse job. But there is a chance Ash could stay, it might be slim, but he knows he is learning under one of the best in the game, and he's soaking up that opportunity. Whether he stays or goes, the Buckeye defense is in much better shape now that what it was when he first arrived in Columbus.
"Considering how well the defending national champs played in Saturday's 42-13 dismantling of Michigan, speculation began immediately as to whether Ohio State could still sneak into the Dec. 6 top four."

As aforementioned, the Buckeyes have a ton of scenarios heading into conference championship week. While the Buckeyes won't be participating, and it really puts a damper on their chances, all hope isn't lost. The chances are extremely slim, but they are there. As Dinich talks about in her article, the protocol of the committee allows Ohio State to be considered as one of the four teams to compete for a title. Their one hope is that the committee finds them, "unequivocally one of the four best teams in the country."
While it doesn't seem that all the dominos could fall in the Buckeyes favor on Saturday, the committee has shown that they believe in the Buckeyes, and their potential. The Buckeyes stomping of the Wolverines this past Saturday helped keep them in contention, whether anybody wants to acknowledge that or not. Michigan has had one of the great defenses in college football all season, and Ohio State picked them apart and had their way with them. The question now is, if North Carolina beats Clemson, and Stanford beats USC, was the Buckeyes win over Michigan convincing enough?

Ohio State linebacker Joshua Perry was named a finalist for the Lott Impact Award, given out to college football's best defensive player in both character and performance. More specifically, the award recognizes college football's Defensive Player of the Year who best exemplifies the IMPACT acronym: Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity.
The senior linebacker has 98 total tackles on the season, with 7.5 going for a loss as well as 3.5 sacks. He is one of the centerpieces of a Buckeye defense that has struck fear in the eyes of many opponents this season. The award has been given out every year since 2004. James Laurinaitis is the only Buckeye to receive the award, when he won it back in 2008.
