Screw Blue
For my first thread, I thought I should start with a topic dear to my heart.
Why do I hate _ichigan so much?
Seriously, is it the uniforms, the players, living through the Cooper era, or that damn song??
I have given this some thought and it is really because of a handful of idiots from Ohio. Bear with me on this one. I think back to my earliest memories of the Buckeyes. I was too young to remember Woody as the actual coach. For me, he was "the old Ohio State coach." He was the guy who was the grand marshal at a parade. I never got to see him in his true glory. No, instead I remember that first Earl Bruce team, the one that lost to USC in the Rose Bowl. My family had just moved to Wisconsin that fall and I remember my dad taking his OSU jersey to work to hang in his locker. I would love to see the Trojans in the NC game this year so that I can finally erase that early memory.
The following year we moved back to Ohio and I spent the majority of my formative years a mere 40 miles from tOSU. I vividly remember proudly sporting my Buckeye attire to school on the day before The Game every year. I fondly remember one year in particular. I was 10 or 11 and we had one of those novelty gift shops in our mall. They had stickers that year with a block "_" with a screw through it and the words "Screw Blue" around the outside. (If anybody can locate a copy of that image I would be eternally grateful... it is the same logo that is on the screw _ichigan flag). I thought that was the coolest thing I had ever seen (well, except maybe the ninja suit pajamas I wanted for Christmas that year). Anyways, I remember getting into a shouting match on the play ground that went back and forth:
"Screw the Blue!" "Spread the Red!" "Screw Blue!" "Spread the Red!"
Even though I was living in the heart of Buckeye country, there were still a few little trolls who rooted for that school up north. When I think about those kids, I realize they were generally the class assholes. They were those kids I always hated. They tried cheat off my homework, they tried to steal my lunch money, and they went with the ugly, loose girls. Things only got worse when I went to middle school. Our colors were urine and blue and our arch rival middle school wore scarlet and grey. (Our school system finally got wise about this after I graduated and changed all the local middle schools to the HS colors of red and black and quit having them play each other so they wouldn't be bitter rivals for 2 years and then have to play together the next four.) At any rate, there were a lot of assholes in my middle school wearing the WRONG colors on the day before The Game.
A couple of weeks ago, I was out at a local restaurant on a Saturday. Like any other Saturday in the fall, I was wearing my OSU sweatshirt. The Bucks didn't play until 3:30 so I didn't mind stopping for lunch with my wife before we headed home to watch the Bucks. We sat in the bar and the Northwestern v tsun game was on the tube. One of the bar tenders came bouncing in with a gay little grin on his face. He spotted my sweatshirt from across the room. In a loud voice he spewed, "_ichigan is going to destroy Ohio State this year!" and "I hope Troy Smith breaks his leg." He continued to make his snide little comments until we left. Now, I live in Cincinnati. The 'Nati is not exactly Buckeye country like the central Ohio town where I grew up. However, I don't expect to be ridiculed by service industry personnel for wearing my OSU sweatshirt on game day. I mean, I got better treatment wearing my Reds hat in the bleachers at Wrigley. Sadly, this guy was not a _ichigan transplant, but a home grown asshole.
I can respect someone that grew up rooting for their home team and doing it with passion. But the _ichigan fans I have grown up around aren't that type of fan. They are either the type who roots for the arch rival just because they are assholes and want you to know it or they are the bandwagon jumpers who went to the dark side during the Cooper era. Both types I loathe. So even though I hate the colors, hate the players, hate the video clip of Howard doing the pose, hate that damned song, and don't give a damn for the whole state of _ichigan; it is because of those Ohio assholes that I really hate them.
After we paste tsun 35-10 this Saturday, I say we ship anyone born and raised in this state who willing roots for tsun north to the cess pool!
GO BUCKS!
