Why high school sports are important

It's definitely a sweet story and everyone involved should be commended...that being said one thing really stuck out to me as being more than little bit assbackwards.

The kid from the other team who tossed the inbound is on the video saying "I was raised to treat everyone the same" (paraphrasing a bit). OK so if you were facing LeBron James, and he'd just had a bad game going 0-fer whatever, you would toss him the ball for an easy layup?

That wasn't treating everyone the same, it was doing something special for a kid who will likely remember it as his favorite memory from childhood.

That of course doesn't take anything away from the gesture, and yes I teared up a bit watching the video.

Nice story, but the role of high school sports is a little too complex to be answered with a feel good story.

For every story like this, I could point to the abysmally corrupting influence of sports on academics in the Chicago Public League or to the misplaced financial priorities all across across rural Texas (or Ohio for that matter. Massillon...cough...cough).

Last game of the year, coach plays a developmentally disabled team manager. despite the best efforts of his teammates to help him get a basket, he keeps missing. With just a few seconds left, the other team has possession on the inbound. The inbounder calls for the team manager and in bounds it to him. The kid makes his shot and the place erupts. So he not only played, he got a steal and a basket.
