Why do you do what you do?

I have always been good at mathematics, have always loved mathematics, and thanks to OSU (and the inability to have enough graduate teaching assistants) was able to teach my last 2 years of undegrad work as a TA and discovered that I could actually communicate the subject to others. Basically, I found something that I love to do, get paid for it, and it is legal, so to me, that means that I don't have a "job".

Being off from mid-December to mid-January is a nice break that I have come to love and my summer break is from early May to the end of August. If I choose to teach in the summer, the pay I get is great/borderline obscene. We have a great contract! And as I get older, I realize that another wonderful 'perk' to this profession is that each year the coeds stay the same lovely 18 - 22 year old age .

My dad ran a construction crew in Ohio, and we didn't get along. So off I went to Florida, graduated from college, and ended up in Georgia with a career in taxation. We got along much better once we had some distance b/t us.

Although I'm making more than I ever thought I would, what I'm making isn't all I thought it'd be. But the bills are paid, got a nice plot of ground, and am able to stuff some extra cash in the grandkids' college fund, plus be generous with charitable stuff.

No complaints, but I would like to have a better understanding of why my dad could never let go and never encouraged me and the sibs to do better, go to college, etc. Those of us who are doing better...well, we had to pick that up on our own. I don't want that for my grandkids (technically, step-grandchildren...I have no children of my own).

I think the mark of a good parent is one who wants his/her children to go further in life. Not as far, but further.

IMO, you should atleast get a paper route. Your wife would appreciate it if you would contribute financially, in some way.

My brother makes over $80k doing that for a defense contractor. (great computer skills and intuition, but lousy interpersonal skills)

Agree on staying home with the kidlings if you can. You can't get that time back.
