Why Bucks Fans Should Root Against Notre Dame

cincibuck

You kids stay off my lawn!
CBSSportsline.com predicts Ohio State will play Florida in the Outback Bowl Jan. 2. The Web site has No. 1 Southern Cal meeting No. 2 Texas in the Rose Bowl, but it also foresees Notre Dame running the table to meet Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl, West Virginia winning the Big East to play Georgia in the Sugar Bowl and UCLA earning a wild-card spot opposite Penn State in the Fiesta.
The CBS site has four other Big Ten teams making it to bowls:
Wisconsin in the Capital One (against Alabama), Northwestern in the Music City (against South Carolina), Michigan in the Sun (against Oregon State), and Minnesota in the Alamo (against Oklahoma).

For those who can't bring themselves to root for other Big 10 teams, especially Michigan, when they play Notre Dame: Now do you get it?

If ND and Ohio State have even seasons Notre Dame is going to get the votes to be the top regional team. Reason has nothing to do with it. The enormous power of the coastal press, areas where ND plays and where they have a following, overwhelms the amount of media attention Ohio State can generate. That impacts on recruiting, poll standings and ultimately on which bowl game we go to. (especially now that the Rose Bowl is no longer the Pac 10 - Big 10 playoff)

So? CFBNews is predicting that Ohio State plays Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl. Now how about that for a game?

Predictions are just that... predictions! We just have to win out and we will be fine.

We just need to take care of our own business and have Penn St and Wiscy lose 1 more game a piece. They play each other so one of them will lose a game. If they both lose 2 Big 10 games and OSU only loses 1 we go to a BCS game. If we win out we don't go lower than the Capital One bowl. Personally I don't know if OSU can win out, but we don't have to scoreboard watch too much.

In any event the odds for Notre Dame getting that easier entry as an automatic or at-large grow steeper in the 2006 season and beyond. I'm not worried and I will not root against ND when it plays sCUM. Others in the Big 10 - perhaps a different matter.

Agree with all others. Take care of fate in our hands, the rest falls in place with a couple of Big10 Losses by Penn State or Wisconsin.

an ohio state fan can still root against michigan but revel in the spoils of a michigan victory, as a michigan victory is better for ohio state's pursuit to a top bowl game. furthermore, rooting for a team has nothing to do with the outcome of the game, unless you're at the game and the extra noise created by one fan is the tipping point.

Folks, the point is region. Since ND won't play us we have to have others take care of them. As the Music Man said, "Either you are closing your eyes to a situation you do not wish to acknowledge, or you are unaware of the calibre of diaster represented by the presence of a Notre Dame in your community."

If Weiss is able to keep ND in the top ten year after year it will have a negative effect on Mid West, Big Ten, and Ohio State football.

I don't think there is anything we can do to get ND to fire Weiss, is there? ND did a good job hiring CW, because he seems to be one of the best coaches in CFB right now. If you don't mind me asking who has ND beat that we lost to? If I remember correctly nobody, in fact we beat one of the teams that beat them. If OSU plays well it doesn't matter what ND does. In fact now that ND is playing better there is probably a better chance of getting them on the schedule because they think they can win. It is probably good for us as OSU fans because ND playing well will force JT to adapt to the new recruiting landscape. If top offensive players start going to ND because they like their offense JT is going to have to bring in someone who can run that type of offense at OSU. JT seems to be a pretty smart guy so I'm sure he will do what he has to to stay on top.

Unless they're predicting Ohio State to lose another game, this scenario isn't possible.

Penn State and Wisconsin play each other. If Penn State loses OSU gets the Capital One bowl with the #2 finish in the Big-10 (one conference loss to Penn State's two) and if Wisconsin loses OSU still gets the Capital One bowl with the #2 finish in the Big-10 (one conference loss to Wisconsin's two). Three of the four remaining teams Ohio State plays (Minnesota, Northwestern, Michigan) would hold a tie breaker over OSU presuming any of them beat OSU, with Minn and NU still having the benefit of being able to lose another game and still claim at worst #3.

There are multiple scenarios where OSU can finish either 1st or 2nd by winning out and 4th or 5th by losing one more. There is only one scenario where OSU finishes the conference 3rd and the entire conference finishes in the order projected by CBS: PSU over Wisky, OSU over NU, NU over Michigan, and Michigan over OSU.
