Whole-Home Humidifiers

Thump

Hating the environment since 1994
  • Any one have these already attached to their furnace to humidify the entire house during the winter?

My wife and I have used a room humidifier but it's a waste.

Have any of you installed one on a furnace?

Yeah, I've got one... it works pretty well... I certainly don't notice the "dryness" of the air... but you have to resist the urge to set it too high, or you start getting condensation all over.

We had one in the house when I was growing up. I don't have one now, and you can really notice the dryness. Are they expensive to add on?

The unit itslef can' be much... the Furnace guy could rpobably do it... though there ia a water line involved... so...

    Mine came with my house.

I bought everything I needed at Home Depot for $190.

My problem is my drain is at one end of the basement and my waterline at the other.

I've been fighting the crud for about 3 weeks and I know it's because I haven't had my room humidifier running.

My throat is all dried out and crap.

It was supposedly a permanent filter that never needed replaced. Unfortunately it only lasted about 2 months before the filter got clogged and the water started running out the back vents of the unit soaking through my floor into the downstairs ceiling.

I think the whole deal should only be a couple hundred bucks. I had one in my last house, it does help. AKAK is right, you need to be careful not to turn it up too high. They do not recommend you put one in a house that is less than 5 years old becuase there is still residual moisture in the lumber.
My neighbor put one in and his wife cranked it up when their kids got sick and never turned it down. They discovered that their attic was not properly ventilated when he went up there and it was nearly raining in there, and the whole attic was covered in mold.

They say to keep the humidity at around 32%.

When you start seeing condensation on the windows, it's too high.

It's amazing how much of a difference it makes with your helath in the winter times.

Gets rid of those nice crusty boogers as well!

    Who are "they"?

The house I just moved into has a humidifier on the furnace, and honestly I'd rather do without it. I'd prefer single room units to regulate the living spaces rather than have the whole home at a specific humidity. I've got shloads of books to store, as well as wine & cigars

My furnace's humidifier and my basement dehumidifer have been battling it out for a couple of weeks now.

Being a Star Wars geek though, it is fun to tell people that I've got to go "work on the evaporators." :wink2:
    {GEEK MODE} Actually it’s “vaporators”:<O:p</O:p
    <O:p</O:p
Uncle Owen: "What I really need is a droid who understands the binary language of moisture vaporators."

C-3PO: "Vaporators? Sir, my first job was programming binary load lifters very similar to your vaporators in most respects."

    New filter for room unit..........................~$14.99
Shallow tub/pan to put to room unit in......~$8.99

    Problem solved.

    :p

I had one in my old house. Shortly after I had it installed we went out of town for two weeks. When I came back I actually had mold on the walls. Apparently I had it set too high :(

When we bought the house, there was one already installed on the furnace, but i don't think it works. There is a switch, but nothing "happens" when I flip it. Also, when I open the water valvle, it just runs through the unit and down a hose into the floor drain.
i guess someday I'll have to have an expert check it out and see if it's worth trying to get it to work. I really do hate the dry air in the winter.
