It's actually less than 50% because you have two isolated incidents that each have a probability of 50%

The probability of your scenario actually reults in a 25% chance

1. Winning the coin toss
2. Electing to defer/receive the kick

they're not isolated incidents / occurences. number 2 follows the outcome of number 1. if you lose the coin toss you don't get to elect and vice versa...
