Who redshirted in '05?

No, not the Frosh. That one is easy.

But this year is unusual in that several nonn-Freshman did not play or were injured and played very little.

Rory Nicol is an example. He was a Soph this year and will be a RS Sohp next year.

I believe Gholston, Freeman, and Rehring (none of whom had redshirted previously) played in a game or two (making them ineligible for a traditional RS) but then they were injured, making them candidates for medical redshirts.

But I am not 100% sure how that works. I know the school has to petition the NCAA, but do they have to wait til their otherwise senior season, or just the end of this season?

BuckTwenty just PMd me that Lyons might be a candidate as well.

Any others? Anyone know just how this plays out procedurally?

I believe, that since they didnt use their redshirt year, that they will petition the NCAA and be granted that extra year.

I believe the guys you listed: Lyons, Nicol, Freeman, and Rehring are the only ones.

I believe this was the same thing that happened with D'andrea and why he got that extra year. When he played in 3+ games two years ago.

From what I understand, medical redshirts are easier to get if the player in question hasn't taken a redshirt. It's when you want that sixth year that the NCAA looks pretty hard. Joe Cooper, D'Andrea, Huston all got theirs, Kyle Turano did not get his sixth year.

I don't think Joe Cooper got six years. He was a 1997 recruit and played until 2001. I think he was considered a senior in 2000 but got an extra year because of academics (prop 48 maybe?????).

next year will be MDA's 5th year. He came in the same year with AJ and Carpenter.

Right, since he was a non/partial (whatever) qualifier, you initially only get 3 competition years, but you can earn the 4th by making "x" amount of progress toward your degree.

From what I know, Freeman, Lyons, Rehring, and Nicol (all would-be redshirt sophomores next year if they get med reds) are eligible for medical redshirts this past year. I was unsure about Gholston and still have him listed as a true junior on my board. I don't believe that Freeman or Lyons played a single down this past year. Both Rehring and Nicol saw time, but were injured within the first 4 games and didn't play the rest of the year, thus they are eligible for med red.

Another question I had was Devin Jordan. I heard back in November that he's been doing a little recruiting for our '06 class, but haven't heard ANYTHING regarding his football/injury status with the team. I'm figuring he's still with the team, but does anyone know for certain when he will be back in pads or what his status is with the team?

Right, forgot that for a minute. He's basically the same situation as Lyons, Rehring, etc. except that he's two years ahead.

Devin was in pads at least from the Northwestern game on, but the kid seems very injury-prone. If he is healthy, he's got a lot of time to make up for. If he does retire, he'll keep his scholarship, and the guys have a standing offer to be around the team, like McNutt, RJ Coleman, and Chattams.
