7-Elevens become Simpsons 'Kwik-E-Marts'
By DAVID KOENIG, AP Business Writer Sun Jul 1, 7:44 PM ET
DALLAS - Over the weekend, 7-Eleven Inc. turned a dozen stores into Kwik-E-Marts, the fictional convenience stores of "The Simpsons" fame, in the latest example of marketers making life imitate art.

Those stores and most of the 6,000-plus other 7-Elevens in North America will sell items that until now existed only on television: Buzz Cola, KrustyO's cereal and Squishees, the slushy drink knockoff of Slurpees.

It's all part of a campaign to hype the July 27 opening of "The Simpsons Movie," the big-screen debut for the long-running television cartoon, which loves to lampoon 7-Eleven as a store that sells all kinds of unhealthy snacks and is run by a man with a thick Indian accent.

It seems to me, given your persona here, that you could make a nice chunk of change making appearances as Apu as part of this campaign if you talked to the right marketing people . . .

I think you are right. Although when I lived on west 8th in columbus, the 7-11 nearby had an Indian "boater" Once, I was going to a Halloween party and didn't have a costume, so I asked the 7/11 if I could borrow his 7/11 jacket to wear. I'm not sure if he understood me, but he said Sure. Unfortunately, I returned it to him...I should have kept it.

I think the new stereotype is hotel management. Some ungodly percentage of hotels are owned by Indians (? 60%). It's alwasy funny going to some town in the middle of nowhere (Twentynine Palms, CA or Kayenta, AZ) and seeing "Andy Patel" greet you in the lobby.

NO DUFF, NO KWIK-E-MART

Homer: "I'm feelin' low, Apu. You got any of that beer that has candy floating in it, you know, Skittlebrau?"

Apu: "Such a product does not exist, sir! You must have dreamed it."

Homer: "Oh. Well then just gimme a six-pack and a couple of bags of Skittles."

I wonder if the stairway to the roof will be in the cooler that's supposed to have the non-alcoholic beer.
