Who Is the Real Culprit in the South Bend Massacre?

Ans: Kevin White

Notre Dame fires coach after just three seasons

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Notre Dame's return to glory under Tyrone Willingham was brief. Too brief.

That's why he was fired Tuesday after just three seasons at Notre Dame - the shortest tenure of any full-time coach since Hunk Anderson was there from 1931-33.

"We simply have not made the progress on the field that we need to make," athletic director Kevin White said. "Nor have we been able to create the positive momentum necessary in our efforts to return the Notre Dame program to the elite level of the college football world."

OK the obligatory Orange Creme Margarita cheapshot out of the way - here are my thoughts on who is the real culprit(s).

His name is Legion for there are many.

Weis scores the biggest portion of the blame, though not for the reasons explicitly stated in your article, which does an excellent job of debunking the "Ty Willingham stole all my players" excuse.

The real reason was specifically stated by Ware during his commentary in the game today at Ross-Ade. Weis deserves blame because he leant on the Senior and Junior talent Ty actually left in South Bend, playing only those most developed players. Even in blow-outs Weis did not blood his younger roster spot holders. Irish fans grouse that the rest of college football should give Weis a free pass this year because the current team is so light on starters or proven players. Guess what Irish, that is exactly due to Weis not giving anything but token attention to player development.

Weis can play with bright shiny toys, he simply does not know how to polish up a promising prospect to meet their full potential. Coach, he is not.

Who else deserves blame -

Well, I would say any assistant that cannot and will not stand up to the girth challenged ex-Offensive Coordinator deserves blame. They should be demanding a change right now, hell they should have demanded it before. Latina (Offensive line coach) gets the bulk of any remaining blame, largely because he was foolish enough to try and get these unblooded players (plus Young and Carlson) to learn each and every position possible on the O-line this year. (In other words buying into Weis' strategy of doing it exactly like the NFL, which works with a base available, which works with experienced talent available. It does not work when you are in a rebuilding year, made more difficult by your head honchos' unwillingness to develop said talent.

Excellent points, Sandgk. Player development is a huge problem in south bend.

History is replete with college guys going to the pros and failing. I can see where a guy like Weis, coming from the Pros, fails in that he doesn't know much about coaching kids v. professional athletes. It's pretty "easy" to teach a complicated system to a 10 year vet of the NFL. Quite another to teach it to a kid who's biggest worry the year before was who he'd nail at prom.

Good writeup LJB.

I've been thinking the same thing as Sandgk, that Weis opted to play his starters when he could have been getting his younger guys in there. And I believe the reason is that he wanted Quinn to get the Heisman and a high draft pick. In other words, it was more important for him to show off the sporty new Weis offense, than worry about the younger kids.

I might be wrong, but it sure smells that way to me.

What happened to him; his last visit was 28 Sep, but he hasn't posted since 25 Jul? Not that I'm complaining though.

Did he take a vow of "posting celibacy" or just "give up posting for Rosh Hashanah"? :slappy:

He was given a 2-month vacation, and has only been lurking for the past week or so, since it expired.

If we reverse the question had things played out differently, who would have taken the credit, had ND "restored their glory"? Sir Charles would have been front and center, with arms upraised, Super Bowl rings gleaming in the sunlight. Sorry, can't have it both ways. For a team like Notre Dame to perform in this drastic of a fashion, the head guy takes the hit. It's one thing to lose games, it's quite another to get your butt kicked on a weekly basis, with the resources and supposed talent available.
