DECATHALON record holder is the best athlete

you kids need to wake up and smell the coffee. the DECATHALON is the greatest test of an "athlete"....speed, strength, agility, explosive power, skill....you can't even make an argument for a single sport athlete. the DECATHALON provides MEASURED statistics in a well-rounded way. the school record holder for Ohio State is the greatest "athlete" in school history. Some concessions can probably be made due to era and such, but the top 5 "athletes" are DECATHLETES, case closed.

Thanks to everyone for all of the input! Paul Warfield and Chris Gamble made the first team, and Cie Grant and Brian Bashnagel made the second. Neal Colzie and Michael Wiley also got significant "love" from the poll-takers.

The "other" category got 33 votes (good for fourth place), but it seems that most of those went to Jesse Owens, who was maybe the best athlete ever anywhere, but who to the best of my knowledge never put on the pads while at Ohio State. He probably would have been a gridiron great, if he had chosen to play football.

EDIT: Please make sure to vote on the other currently "open" polls: Fullback, Wide Receiver, Tight End, Offensive Tackle, and Offensive Guard; Center opens this Saturday.

Agree with Grad and Lord Jeff on first three. Warfield, Gamble, Bashnagel and at #4 ...Neal Colzie. He was a true joy to watch. Gifted, skilled and passionate enough to blow-up any play he was in on. No complaints with Cie Grant's selection. He was very, very good. But Colzie was scary good.

Never saw Janowicz, but from his reputation, I'd say he needs to be wedged into this group somehow too. He did it all.

I'd be prepared to save a 'Reserved' spot for Teddy Ginn. He's as close to Warfield as I've ever seen in scarlet and gray. He may prove to be better, which is scary in itself.

Whether you are talking about 1950 or 2004, Janowicz tops this list. Why segregate Vic (and others) because of what era they played at Ohio State?

*****

Saw Vic at the McDonald's on Olentangy about a year before he died - the guy looked like a million bucks, very stylish.

The title "best athlete" and then a list of football players is off. Where's Owens? Where's Havlicheck?

But since you're limiting this football, I see no mention of Jim Parker. Unquestionably the finest offensive lineman OSU produced until Orlando Pace. When Orlando retires and we can compare their final records it will be close, but I'm sure Parker will stand up to the challenge.
