White Sox Tidbits (2009)

it has just been announced that tomorrow will be a national holiday as mark buehrle and dewayne wise will be flown to washington to receive the highest pedestrian honor, given by barack in his white sox windbreaker.

Obama happens to be in Chicago this evening, so they don't have to fly to D.C. :wink2:

Fernando Vina of ESPN has called Wise's play "the greatest catch in MLB history".

Can't believe I missed this today! Congrats to Mark, he always has been one of my favorite Sox, and deserves all the publicity he can get.

I'll always remember way back in the day when he was coming up through the minors, I made a habit of reading some White Sox fan board (maybe through AOL?), and one of the posters asked us other fans to root for her brother, who she was hoping would get his call up soon. At the time, I assumed it was just some random pitcher, never imagining what he'd turn out to be. But it reminded me that behind the scenes each one of these guys had a personal story with family and friends. Some guys never make it, others make it big, but there's always a story there.

I'm pretty sure it was his sister...anyway, I guess the details aren't that important; his family must be so happy with the ways things have turned out.

ESPN showed a graphic listing all of the pitchers who have a perfect game, another no-hitter, and a World Series title all for the same team:

Cy Young

Sandy Koufax

Mark Buehrle

That's a fairly exclusive list to get your name on.

Beuhrle retired everybody through 5 2/3 tonight, setting a MLB record of 45 batters in a row....breaking Bobby Jenks and some nobody's record of 41.

It's one thing for a reliever but to be a full time starting pitcher to get it done is friggin amazing.

These last 3 games have been a thing of beauty. Hopefully they can build on it going forward and overtake the Tigers for first. Detroit isn't exactly lighting the world on fire right now.

BTW, I love watching the Yankees get their asses kicked!

The White Sox have completly fallen apart. It's time for some changes on this team. They haven't been 5 games above .500 all season. They can't execute to save their life, they are hyper aggresive on the base paths and constantly get thrown out, the 3rd base coach sends everyone home when he shouldn't and vice versa. Our hitting coach is worthless and can't get players as good as Jermaine Dye out of a slump. The club really is a joke right now they've completly given up and so have I.

Well it appears the changes are happening...they appear to be firesaling, with Thome already gone and Dye apparently also on the block. I'm a bit surprised since they're only 6 back, but I guess it is time for some changes and they don't think they measure up down the stretch.
