Your Cousin In New Mexxico
It's the end of the year so I like to look back and toward the future. As a child of the Fifties, I was fed the notion that the future was bright with technology and innovation. So.
Where did my jet car go?
I was so looking forward to being able to fly back to Ohio in my own personal Jetson's jet car. It would have been really, really cool. No traffic and construction worries. No staying overnight in crappy hotels or too expensive ones. No strange food. But, I suppose I should just count my blessings, because if I could have a jet car so could the monster-in-law!
But, I was sold a story that we would all be driving them by now. I tend to think it was just like the trolley car systems in big cities that GM paid to have destroyed. The big car companies wanted us to by what they made, not something from Boeing or Piper. But, there is still hope as some clever entrepreneurs are working on hover cars. But, they will have major obstacles to overcome. Like; Is it a plane or an automobile that flys? Can they make the cost competitive with automobiles? And can they make them fuel efficient?
And where is my household robot? The Jetson's had one. I would make the primary job of mine washing clothes, cooking and washing dishes. Since those are the things I most dislike spending my time doing. Oh! And changing the oil in my cars. It's not the worse job, but I could be happier without hot, dirty oil running down my arms.
William Gibson wrote an intriguing book about the future called. "Neuromancer". I haven't read it yet so it would seem to be a good read for us futurist.
I am still dependent on the electric and gas companies for most of my energy needs, so at some time in the future I hope to address at least one of those with some solar power. Solar hotwater in relatively cheap to buy and would reduce my carbon footprint.
I have to say the Internet is one area where we seem to have made the most advances. I wonder if that's because of private enterprise? I now have high speed access to the world and just that is pretty amazing. And I can talk to my brothers-in-law in Thailand (on Skype) for free. And it sounds better than my regular(local) phone line.
And satellite tv just plain old kicks ass! I haven't a super thin flat screen, yet. Pretty soon super flat screens will be the normal tv. And all your electronics(tv, phone, games, stereo will be in one box.
But.
I still want my Jetson's jet car!
