What's Your Starting Defense?

RhodeIslandBuck

This guy's a real jerk
There has been a lot of talk about this year's defense and for obvious reasons, and it seems like there will be alot of competition at each position. So Who do you guys think the starters will be when the season comes around?

Here's my take:
DE-Lawrence Wilson
DT-Quinn Pitcock
DT-David Patterson
DE-Vernon Gholston
OLB-Marcus Freeman
MLB-James Laurinaitis
OLB-Larry Grant (I think Grant will move Laurinatis to the inside therefore taking Ker out of the 1st unit)
CB-Malcolm Jenkins
SS-Jamario O'Neal
FS-Nick Patterson
CB-Antonio Smith (I think Smith gets the nod at the season-opener but Amos will eventually win over the job)

Thoughts?

DE - Wilson
DT - Patterson
DT - Pitcock
DE - Gholston
SAM - Terry
MIKE - Laurinaitis
WILL - Freeman
BC - Jenkins
FS - Patterson
SS - O'Neal
FC - Washington
(NB - Russell)

Some interesting movement on the chart there. Add to the fact that jwins has seen these guys actually play this spring, he might be on to something.

The first thing that jumped out at me when I saw JWins list was the youth on the defense...

2006 eligibility
DE - Wilson SOPH
DT - Patterson SR
DT - Pitcock SR
DE - Gholston JR... maybe SOPH with medical RS
SAM - Terry JR
MIKE - Laurinaitis SOPH
WILL - Freeman SOPH
BC - Jenkins SOPH
FS - Patterson SOPH
SS - O'Neal SOPH
FC - Washington FR
(NB - Russell) FR

If that does hold out, this should be an excellent unit in 2007 (and even 2008, with 6 of the back 7 returning). Oh, and 2006 should be alright as well

that list is definitely young, I'm not sure if we'll get a 3rd year out of freeman as a starter. Pure speculation, but he will be highly touted by midseason if he lives up to expectations. If he is that good, it would be hard to return after two solid seasons with a high draft stock.

the field corner position manned by Washington has been from other opinions, as of now it sounds as though he might be leading at that position.

I know Gholston is a freaking monster, but Tres loves his seniors. I'd go with JRich at the other DE (opposite Wilson) and Kerr in the middle with Laurinaitis on the outside. I know, I'm boring. That also skews that young defense to a more senior-based one. Wait a second, was this what we want our defense to look like, or what we think it will look like when the season comes around?
