What used car would you buy

gbearbuck

Herbie for President
With 27's post I got to thinking... what car would I buy if I was "in the market" right now (which I'm not).

If you were in the market to buy a used car (used car so folks could buy a "nicer" car with the same money) what car would you buy? And Why?

As I said in a couple years I hope the "old" BMW 540's drop in price. In 2004 the new body style came out. I figure in two years there will be enough of the "new" body styles in the used market to reduce the price on the "old" body style. That's what I have my eye on.

My wife really likes Volvo S-60, S-80, or their sport-Ut... she's already lobbying for one of those cars...

Easy. WRX (sti would be a dream, but unlikely). It may not look like much, but that car blows away anything in its price range... and is reliable and safe in bad weather on top of being a performance car.

I used to drive a 540 - fast, but small, and lousy in the snow; if you like BMW's, try to hold out for the 740 or 745 - a much nicer ride (but still not a winter car).

My dream car would be an Aston Martin Vanquish....

Yeah.. Well.. its not small if you drive a 3 series right now. :)

Anyway... Was it Lousy in the snow? Or 'Fun" in the snow... because that's what I like to call my 3 when I forget to take the pirelli's off it before the first snow of the year.... "Fun"

LordJeff,

I actually like the E better than the 5 series (I'm just curious to see what happens to the old body style of the 5 series once the new ones can be purchased in the used market (with plenty of supply... I realize you can find used '04 however it is tough to find them).

I think the 7 series is a bit much for me. I think of it as an old persons car... I'm 28. In ten-fifteen years that might be something I'd preffer.

I like the Jag S-type, Benz C and E type (although the C is a bit small), BMW 5 series (with the bigger engines 540 or 530), Audi A-6 (again, comes with several engine sizes... only quattro and bigger engine... this one might drop in price in a couple years due to the new body style as well), I think the new Acura TL is sharp looking... if those don't work a class down would include a VW Passat, Lincoln LS (V8 of course), Volvo S-80, Saab 9-3 (a bit small... I don't care for the 9-5 though), "Old" body style of the BMW 3 series (although I doubt I'd get it... they seem to hold their value... you can get a better bang for your buck with other cars).... I doubt the price will come down enough, but I really like Range Rovers (I know they are in the shop often), VW's Tourag, and BMW's X-5...

AKAK,

Come on, I know what you want... post your desire...

I got rid of the 540 the day after it couldn't make it up my 50-foot long driveway which was lightly dusted with snow.... It was kind of fun driving it on the highway in the snow, not knowing which lane I'd end up in....

Solved that problem with a Range Rover.

Did you have your 540 when you went to Amherst?

Pretty funny, but no....
I asked because we get hammered with snow around here. Actually, I had no idea what a 540 looked like, since there aren't a lot a BMW's in this area.

Four wheel drive is a must for me, so I'm going for a late model Ford Power Stroke diesel.

I think that half the student population drove BMW's, Volvo's, Saab's, etc. - of course the cars were all older models, since no one wanted to appear too bourgeois....

Yukon. I bought a used 2001 early last spring, and I have yet to see anything that suits me that I like better. Many of the vehicles you guys have listed I simply do not fit in (6'4"+, 250-ish), but I think that is mostly because a lot of my height is in my body. I only wear a 32 to 34 inch inseam in my pants, so head room is a problem in most of the vehicles mentioned. The Audi A6 is roomy enough, and the V8 Quattro is frickin sweet...but I like the SUV better, so I'd stick with a Yukon...or evena step up, and go with the Yukon Denali.

Hell Yeah... that's what I'm talking about... last winter... first snow was about a 2 inches.. maybe 3... still coming down... I was driving on Morse Road in my 3... - coming home from a bar of course-(the direction I was going there was no salt yet and I still had the performance tires on it) and just before I got to 71... some Chick- in a mini van- decides to turn left and only "kind of" gets into the center turn lane... the chick behind her- also in a Mini Van- panics and locks up and starts into a sideways slide... The only place for me to go is into the turn lane where the first chick is turning... I lock up... but keep it strait as she turns out of my way... no problem... then.... dumbass AKAK... in his relief- and eagarness to get the out of the turn lane- goes back on the power... car immediately went around on me toward the oncoming traffic... which was about 3-400 yards away... somehow, in the middle of the spin... I realized that the oncoming lanes had been treated with salt... so I threw in into second and redlined it until I spun onto the treated black top and blew off in the other direction... no harm no foul... Went home and put the All weather tires on it in the snow that night....

Ahhh.... the miracle of rear wheel drive (which I would denounce if front wheel drive weren't so gay)... so needless to say, I'd love to get an M-3... I bet I could really spin that motherfucker... gbear and I have been looking at those ugly assed M-3 Coupe thingy that's like a hardtop Z-3... not too many out there...(968's are about the same price... so if that opportunity presents itself... there's going to be a decsion problem) but they are reasonbly priced because most people hate them... By the time I get around to actually spending money on a car, I'll probably go 530-540 or whatever... Wife's easy... she wants a Liberty... end of story... she's already shopping.
