Local trio to be part of OSU tradition

By LANCE CRANMER ? Assistant Local Editor ? November 10, 2008

Three Chillicothe natives will have a brush with Ohio State University history this weekend - and it all begins with an 83-year old turtle.
A wooden one named Illibuck.
"Ohio State is rich with tradition," said OSU junior and Chillicothe High School grad Jaimie Horning. "It's neat to be part of one of the longest standing ones."
Horning, a 2006 CHS grad, along with Brandon Smith, also a CHS alum, and Kristen Monroe, an '06 graduate of Southeastern, are members of the Bucket and Dipper Junior Class Honorary at Ohio State.
The century-old junior class honorary has been in charge of OSU's end of the Illibuck Trophy since its origination back in 1925.
The Illibuck Trophy, a large wooden turtle, is traditionally passed back and forth between Ohio State and the University of Illinois each year depending on the winner of the previous year's football game.
"We will travel up to the University of Illinois and will stay with our counterpart there, Atius-Sachem, who will host us for the weekend," said Horning. "During the third quarter, ten members from Bucket and Dipper and ten members from Atius-Sachem will go out for the pass."
Traditionally, the turtle - once an actual live turtle, which has since been carved out of wood ten different times - must be passed over the heads of the members from one side to the other.
Ohio State had held the trophy since 2002, but last year's 28-21 Illini victory means it must change hands again.
"It's the first time in a long time," said Horning. "It would be our class that had to pass it away."
Horning, a junior majoring in speech and hearing science, was chosen with Smith and Monroe from a large group of applicants to participate in the Illibuck hand-off.

arent the gold pants just an OSU thing?

Michigan players are supposed to get something for beating OSU as well...

..It's just been so long since its happened that they've all forgotten what it's supposed to be

Time to win this bitch back on Saturday @ 12....GO BUCKS!!!

Does anyone else kind of find it silly that they wait a year before handing the trophy over?

I mean how silly is it going to be having us hand over the trophy to them for the year if we're beating them by 4 touchdowns at the time of the ceremony..
