What Is A Wheel Route?

usually it's when a reciever/running back runs 5 yards forward then runs 5 yards toward the sidelines and then turns back upfield for about 10-20 yards.

The reason teams do this is if someone is biting on the out route this is the perfect thing to do. So the corner/whoever comes up thinking he's running a simpel 5 yard route then all the sudden the offensive player runs back up field

imagine seeing the field like on TV. Now drawl a block S near the top.

A wheel route is a deep route usually ran by a slot receiver, tight end, or tailback. It is a route that starts out like a route to the flats, but ends up turning upfield along the sideline. It is most effective when ran in conjunction with a deep post against cover 2 or by a quick back matched up with a linebacker in man coverage.
