What impact will the 2006 Fiesta Bowl have on recruiting?

Right... I don't specifically remember who the holdouts were either.. well.. one or two come to mind, but its not like 9 kids who were deciding between LSU and Georgia (or whoever) all the sudden said, "Hey, lets go be Buckeyes!"

The key is success over time and building a bigger pool of guys interested in you... that we can do it over an emerging recruiting rival (regionally) is a big plus, I think, though.

AKA nailed it. Games like this help down the road, especially on a national level. As the reputation for winning big ones continues to grow, more eyes are opened as to what you have to offer. Making big plays on national t.v. sure doesn't hurt. Our recruiting base will continue to grow, but it's not an overnight thing.

Who knows what the impact of this game will have on recruiting? I thought that the 2002 Fiesta Bowl win would really help recruiting that year; however, (in my opinion) the 2003 class was just average. It only had 15 players and so far only Whitner, Patterson, Gonzalez, and Youboty have seen significant playing time. Although Boeckman and Frost could be future stars.
To call the 2003 class "just average" is being very charitable, IMHO. Rivals ranked the class 41st nationally, and that was before 5 players left the program due to academic and legal issues (Guilford, Hiley, Irizarry, Maupin, and Smith). Of the remaining players, Whitner is a star, Youboty and Barton have been solid and will get even better, Patterson and Gonzalez have been valuable role players, and Frost has some huge upside; Cotton, Boeckman, Lukens, and Jordan will struggle to see the field. So far, one true star, four solid contributors, one potential contributor/star, four buried on the depth charts, and five busts - just not a very good class at all. For a similar view of the 2003 recruiting season, check out Oh8ch's post: LINK

As far as the impact of yesterday's game ... it certainly can't hurt to beat a national power like Notre Dame in such convincing fashion, but most of the 2007 recruits (believe it or not) already know where they want to go, and one game or even a successful season won't change too many minds. If yesterday's game helps with one or two kids (Oglesby and Martin come to mind), then that would be a big plus. Notre Dame didn't turn into Ball State overnight just because they lost to one of the best teams in the country in a BCS bowl game - it takes several years (or in ND's case, several decades apparently) before a team's reputation swings too far in one direction or another. And besides, there are just too many factors and preconceptions in play for a single game to mean much in the long run.

I dont know if somebody started this thread and merge it if there is another similar one.

Im still wondering how much this game will help tOSU recruiting? I wonder how much this weill change the minds of HS seniors on the fence about where to go. ND does appear to have a very stong recruiting class and i wonder if this will help tOSU in the battle for Ohio's best.

Significant. Maybe not this year but in a loaded Midwestern 2007 class, being top dog in the region, and needing a decent sized class is gonna be huge. I anticipate a huge recruiting year next season.<O:p</O:p

As far as the 2003 class went the instate talent that year was like the potato blight in Ireland. Of the ones who got away only Ray Edwards amounted to anything. We cried and whined about Burgess and Crable it appears for no good reason.

Hopefully players are looking at more than a single game when making such an important decision. One game won't sway many players.

However... some of the comments I've read from student athletes in reference to Notre Dame seem to indicate that ND's tradition as a football powerhouse influences how powerful recruits believe the program is today. No doubt most will take a serious look at the data before committing... but this is one case where a head-to-head matchup could pay dividends in helping recruits to question their assumptions about ND and especially how the program compares to tOSU.

Where I see this game helping is the tone it sets. For a while, I know other teams have been using the excuse/argument against us that we have no offense. After hanging 613 yards on the Irish, no one can use that anymore. We now have an exciting offense that kids will want to play for.

Good point! Hanging the most yards on Notre Dame EVER (ever = their "sterling" 118 year history) should AT LEAST turn some recruits heads- if not this year, then during the coming years.
