What Happens to College Football if the NFL Goes On Strike?

Bobby Hoying

All-American
From what I have read the NFL will probably go on strike/lockout on March 4, so what effects will college football feel if there is a strike?

I guess ratings and attendance will go up, but could college football get NFL fans to be college fans even after the strike is over?

I didn't realize it but the NFL Draft will happen regardless if there is a strike or not.

Here is an interesting article-

The two sides can?t even agree on a time and place to meet formally, though the union hopes the league may come to the table after the owners meet Tuesday in Atlanta.

I really think theres a good chance it could happen, you say they aren't that dumb, but owners are so freakin greedy, and the NFLPA wants so much, Owners are more than willing to lockout to save $$$$

to answer the question, don't think much will happen, ratings may go up, but don't think attendance will go up

I don't think attendance could really go up at any of the big programs around the nation, as most of them already sell out every, or nearly every home game. The programs in and around NFL-minded cities (Miami, NY area, Cali) could see some increase in attendance (certainly not a bad thing for the sport). However, I would not anticipate more than one NFL season being lost due to a strike/lockout, so development of new "true fans" would probably not see any appreciable increase. Ratings will obviously go up, though. People will want their football fix, and I think a lot will find the college game exciting, or more exciting than they thought.

In the long run, both sides lose money if they wipe out a season. Both realize it. I expect a lockout, and it may run all the way into August, but there will be an NFL season.

I don't think it'll do much for college either way. The graduates of Favorite NFL team University will still do their chores on Saturdays. :wink2:

the players who declared for the draft and signed an agent would be s.o.l. they could not come back to college because they signed an agent and therefor would have to either take a year off and train or join the arena or canadian leagues.

Just to muddy the waters a little more - I was watching the NFL network (I think.....hell, it might have been ESPN.......) anyhow, they mentioned that the coaches are going to meet at this year's combine to discuss the possibility of forming a coaches union. Discussion to center around the potential benefits, as well as who would be eligible - head coaches - yes, coordinators - ?, assistants - ?, trainers/medical staff/etc - ?. They also mentioned that if that comes to fruition, the owners have already begun to discuss the fact that they would like to see some sort of salary cap for coaching staffs.
