Coming to a Horseshoe near you: No. 1 vs. No. 2?

Saturday's Ohio State-Cincinnati football game is a perfect example why gambling on sports will drive you to drink just about anything but the gas in the mower. The Buckeyes are 291/2-point favorites. No way Jim Tressel runs it up on his pal Mark Dantonio. Then an old guy from South Africa kicks a 52-yard field goal with 74 seconds to play. OSU wins by 30.
Big Game hype: Considering that most of the Big Ten looks as scary as a litter of newborn puppies, it's not too early to start talking OSU-Michigan. The Horseshoe, Nov. 18. Could it be No. 1 vs. No. 2?


The Buckeyes' schedule isn't extremely scary. Things could go haywire at Iowa, but OSU will be looking for payback from that meltdown in Iowa City two years ago. Michigan's three toughest games appear to be Penn State, Michigan State and Iowa, but they get the Spartans and Hawkeyes at the Big House.
Yeah, it's early, and a lot of teams need to lose, but it could happen.

Like it - sure.

Think it will happen - no. But, at this rate scUM will come in fairly well ranked.

There are a few games between then and now that should have our attention, so after this post its back to State Penn, then at night in Kinnick Stadium and so on and so forth ..

it would be sweet, if that happens. I dont think scum can make a #2 run this year. I think Henne will have a let down some where or hart will get hurt.
But then agian it does not matter as long as we kick there butts all over the place!!

that would be Awesome, but one game at a time right now it's way to early in the season.
Wow if that happenens, which it might if alot happens. That week I'll be throwing up also with nerves, but one good thing I'll be there at the horseshoe if it happens.

Wolverine questions answered

Questions surrounded a Michigan football team that rolled into South Bend after devouring two cupcakes to open the college football season.
The Wolverines proved next-to-nothing in easy wins over Vanderbilt and Central Michigan, sticking primarily to a ground game led by Mike Hart and an athletic defense led by first-year coordinator Ron English.
Essentially, the two victories were gimmes over inferior foes. What everyone wondered was how Michigan would stack up against an elitist outfit like Notre Dame. How could Michigan possibly stop an offense designed by a New Jersey-bred football genius? The Irish not only had coach Charlie Weis on their side but the next Heisman Trophy winner, too, quarterback Brady Quinn to be so annointed after capping a 13-0 run with a victory over Ohio State in the national title game.
And what would people make of Michigan if it returned home following another in a string of August and September road kills? Would the Wolverines continue to rate as one of college football's true blue bloods? Or would they be viewed as a giant in the midst of free fall? What about the job security of coach Lloyd Carr?
Well, all those questions seem about as silly today as the Quinn-for-Heisman campaign, don't you think?
Michigan made a statement in its 47-21 thumping of Notre Dame under the Golden Dome. Simply put, the Wolverines are going to be a fixture in the national landscape for some time to come. English, after Jim Herrmann so unceremoniously departed for the NFL, has re-energized a Michigan defense that is playing at warp speed, at least by Big Ten standards.
The Wolverines harassed Quinn into three picks. Prescott Burges returned the first for a touchdown. LaMarr Woodley picked up a fumble and took it to the house. Remember that name, Woodley. He is a gifted rush end who brings heat off the edge. He is the guy who might be nabbed near the top of the draft, not Quinn.
Carr improved his coaching record at Michigan to 16-6 vs. top-10 opponents, a sparkling winning percentage of .727. He is now 4-1 against teams ranked No. 2 at the time of kickoff. And people want to dump him? Come on. He is the reason Michigan has developed in the new millennium into Quarterback U.
During his tenure with the Wolverines, either as an assistant or the head coach, he has developed Elvis Grbac, Todd Collins, Scott Driesbach, Brian Griese, Tom Brady, Drew Henson, John Navarre and now Chad Henne. Henne, in his third year as a starter, bounced back from a bad throw and subsequent interception to shred the Notre Dame secondary with his pinpoint passing. And sophomore wideout Mario Manningham was nothing short of super.
The Wolverines, even with a big lead, kept a relentless attack on the Irish. Credit offensive coordinator Mike DeBord for calling an excellent game. What's next? Wisconsin. From that game will come the answer to many more questions about Michigan and the Big Ten race.

Once every 5-10 years 1 plays 2 in regular season, let-alone 1 plays 2 twice

No questions answered, one game against a mediocure ND team. I have agreed all summer that ND was overrated and I still believe ND to be a 4 loss team....Michigan has a ways to go in the coming weeks (to start with Wiscy followed by scUM lite)

Only 7 times has a team been involved in a pair of #1 vs. #2 games in the same football season (note - this uses AP poll rankings of #1 vs #2 only).

The same #1 team has only beaten a pair of #2 teams in 3 different seasons:

1943 Notre Dame.....defeated #2 Michigan, and #2 Iowa Pre-Flight
1945 Army..............defeated #2 Notre Dame, and #2 Navy
1971 Nebraska.........defeated #2 Oklahoma, and #2 Alabama (Orange Bowl)

Only 4 other teams have been involved in a pair of #1 vs. #2 matchups in the same season:

1963 Texas.............defeated #1 Oklahoma, defeated #2 Navy (Cotton Bowl)
1986 Miami..............defeated #1 Oklahoma, LOST to #2 Penn State (Fiesta Bowl)
1987 Oklahoma........defeated #1 Nebraska, LOST to #2 Miami (Orange Bowl)
1993 Florida St.........LOST to #2 Notre Dame, defeated #2 Nebraska (Orange Bowl)

Thus, only 4 teams have ever won a pair of #1 vs #2 matchups in the same year, and all four won the National Championship.
