Western Conf Final: Wings-Hawks

I fuckin' hate Detroit so much. It's so godamn annoying that 30 year old journeyman forward can wander onto Detroit and suddenly be good. Also annoying as hell that Ozzy can suck all year and then do this in the playoffs.

Gotta play better in front of Bulin and stay off the PK.

Gotta love it when a first rounder from the Dollar Bill Wirtz era comes back and bites you in the ass right?

Don't kid yourself, he was almost out of the NHL when he got his shot in Detroit. He was AWFUL as a 'Hawk bad in Edm too. If he had an '06-'07 like his '05-'06 in Detroit, he woulda been waived. Not sure what you're trying to say about him but he certainly was a journeyman at best before he got to Detoilet.

yeah and if he has a 2000-01 type season in 2005/2006 he's likely still a Red Wing.

So?

The point is your guys gave up on a YOUNG player who might have paid dividends too you.

I can only say, especially since before this year Cleary has played mainly 3rd and 4th lines, that he wasn't being used correctly in Chicago.

either way, I'm glad he is with Detroit now.

LOL there are a lot of guys I fault the Hawks for giving up on too early (Anton Babchuk), Dan Cleary isn't one of them. He didn't REALLY come into his own until he was 28... if the Hawks waited for every bust they ever took to be 28 before they cut ties with them they'd still be awful.

dan cleary had 3 80+ point years as a bellville bull.

the one year he played any real time in chicago he had 4/5/9 in 35.
the next year he split time between hamilton (22/52/74 in 58 games) and edmonton (3/2/5 in 17)
then he played the majorit of the next three years (81,65,57 games) in edmonton with (35,25,17 points)
then his year in the desert with the yotes and 17 points.
then he was not tendered an offer post lockout and ended up with the wings. 15,40,42,40 points in those four years.

cleary is a tweener, not the sandpaper grinder for most teams bottom six and not enough pure skill for the top six. granted for the wings he fits in the bottom six since he his that tweener, he has skill (not top flight but dont kid yourself) and brings some physicality to the game (once again to a grinder but a solid two way player). the wings have assembled a line for him to play with that fits nicely, kudos to holland and co for that.

it happens all the time, guys dont fit right or dont have the right linemates or some just develop later, with cleary i think it was a combo of all three things. but to say he wasnt a good player or productive is a tad out there. he just didnt seem to fit the systems being implemented, he fits a very nice role in motown.
