As Mountains Are Gouged Away, Environmentalists Mine W.Va. for New Nicknames

For three West Virginia environmentalists, the Mountain State might be more accurately nicknamed the Topless State, and the West Virginia University Mountaineers should be called the Strippers.

Denise Giardina, Arla Ralston, and the Rev. Jim Lewis contend that strip mining and mountaintop-removal mining ? in which peaks are blasted away to provide access to underlying coal ? are destroying the natural beauty of the Appalachians and have left the state and its largest university unworthy of their monikers. The trio is sponsoring a tongue-in-cheek competition that asks West Virginia residents to suggest new nicknames for the state and the university's sports teams. Winners in both categories will be chosen this month, and each will receive $100. Entrants must have a West Virginia mailing address, and suggestions should be sent by July 20 to: Nickname Contest, P.O. Box 20454, Charleston, W.Va. 25362.

Took one of my fraternity brothers to P-burg for one of a couple bachelors nights before he tied the knot... went to a gentleman's club and all I have to say is that was hands down the scariest night ever.

Based on said experience, I'm in favor of _not_ changing the name.
