West Virginia/JUCO/C.W. Post/Kean RB Jason Gwaltney (official thread)

This is relevant and has been asked so here is an update:

Scout $

Scooter Berry is rehabbing from a torn ACL but will visit WVU 1/28 for his official visit. He will redshirt next year. He is still 100% committed to WVU.

A few have asked about the package deal for Berry & JG. Berry's only other offer is from Central Florida.

Jason is down to USC and OSU. WVU and BC are out. He is not leaning to one school or the other at this point. He loves the fan support and the stadium at OSU. He has become close with Coach Hazell, Coach Doc Tressel, and Coach Jim Tressel. He also admires the USC staff. JG's dad really liked JT as well and his family appreciates how genuine the OSU staff appears to be. Pete Carroll has his in-home visit next week. He is announcing 2/1 on ESPN. Playing as a freshman is probably the biggest factor to JG. Distance from home is not an issue. He is extremely confident about his abilities.

That is the only factor that really sacres me at this point.
Do we have any options left? I know JT allready has his in home,
but what about the other coachs? Doc? Hazel?
We are going to have to pull out all the stops on this one.

Positive update for OSU

Playing as a freshman is probably the biggest factor to JG.
I am not trying to read into this latest update but I think this would sway him to OSU if this is his biggest concern, obviously he would have a chance to win the job with only three scholarship RBs on the roster for next year. (Pittman, Haw and Wells)

I think its 50/50 from his recent comments.

the negative part of the BN update is that he says his dad doesnt care about distance from home anymore. that doesnt bode well for osu. it seems his family was the one obstacle that could trip up usc.

dont pick things apart that people say....thats what bnuts does.
You hit on the head the main problem many have with the recruiting process. This statement should be the official motto of the recruiting forum here at Buckeye Planet.

IIRC, Nevadabuck mentioned this shortly after the AA game. Early significant PT at OSU, along with his dad and uncle wanting him at OSU, are probably helping OSU at this point. It sounds as if this young man is truly torn at this point in time between 2 outstanding programs.

If you've read the entire article I think you will agree that it sounds very positive for OSU. But let's keep in mind that it was written by a Bucknuts reporter, and thus is probably slanted in our favor a bit. We have seen it many times before...an article about a recruit such as JG or Walker Ashley written by a reporter from USC, PSU, etc. that does not seem to give the Buckeye much of a chance. Every Doug Worthington article since his verbal to OSU written by a Southern Scout reporter or a SEC school reporter makes it sound like he is looking for a way out of his commitment to OSU. My point is that I wouldn't read TOO much into this article.

Having said that, it appears as though for the first 11 months of his recruitment, Jason has been going off emotion and gut feelings. From his snap decision to commit to WVU with Scooter to his supposed announcement during a recruit dinner at USC. As NLOID draws closer, it appears that JG and everyone in his camp are beginning to look at things much more objectively. The depth chart at OSU is obviously appealing, and it appears as though, despite his comments, distance is a little bit of a factor. The OSU staff has done a great job squashing any rumors about impending NCAA sanctions and JG has said he is no longer concerned about that. The in-home visit that PC has is obviously still a huge scare, even though he won't be using the private jet, but I am sure that we will be sending someone out to see Jason soon, most likely coach Hazell or Doc Tressel. I have been a pessimist about JG for quite some time, but I am starting to become cautiously optimistic. I think this one may go down to the wire...

Every school has to have a competitive advantage in recruiting a certain position. At OSU there are a number of positions we recruit well. However, running back has to be the single most prized position on an Ohio State football team. Being the starting tailback at THE Ohio State University carries some serious weight. What's my point? My point is that if we can't beat USC for an OOS running back in a head-to-head matchup when they have 2 big-time backs returning and a third that has a 1000 yard season under his belt when we have 2 scholarship running backs, then IT AIN'T EVER GONNA HAPPEN VERSUS USC FOR AN OOS KID! Ol' Petey has been kicking JT all over the place in head-to-head matchups, but MAYBE, JUST MAYBE Jimmy Tressel ends the Rope-a-dope, comes out swinging, and lands a sucker punch to ol' petey's kisser. Wouldn't that be beautiful?

Ps. Someone please tell me OSU issending someone out to NY next week to counter Petey.

Hey- Doesn't Mr Kramer have a meeting to get to that you have to attend?

Can anyone tell me if Petey recruited any of the OOS kids we've already got?

Just wondering.

If I remember correctly, Kramerica interns spend a lot of time mending chicken wire. The first and only rb offered by USC from May 1, until September was Maurice Wells. In fact, Caroll told Wells that if he committed to USC, he would be the only rb in this class and the next. I dont think Petey won that battle.

Absolutely.

Pete told Maurice Wells that if he committed to USC that he would be the only running back that they recruited this year.

That should tell Jason about the type of back that they are looking at for their offense.

Coach Tressel wants to run out of the I. With Dionte Johnson and Jason Gwaltney back there and Wells in the slot/wing and Teddy Ginn and Santonio outside...
