UPDATE: West Orange-Stark quarterback Reggie Garrett was pronounced dead at Memorial Hermann Baptist-Orange at 9:30 p.m. Friday night, according to hospital spokeswoman Mary Poole.
Garrett arrived at the emergency room at 8:30 p.m.
Poole said an autopsy has been ordered and the death is being investigated.
Garrett collapsed on the sideline soon after he threw his second touchdown pass of the game.
WEST ORANGE, Texas - The West Orange-Stark football team played most of its game Friday with concern for a teammate who collapsed on the sideline and was taken by stretcher to an ambulance midway through the second quarter.
Senior quarterback Reggie Garrett collapsed on the sideline soon after he threw his second touchdown pass of the game.
Garrett did not appear to suffer an injury before he collapsed. WO-S head coach Dan Hooks said Garrett appeared to experience a seizure. Fans clapped and shouted encouragement as medics took Garrett off the field. The game resumed soon after medics put Garrett in an ambulance.
Garrett?s second touchdown pass gave the host Mustangs a 21-0 lead. A 6-foot-2, 175-pound quarterback, Garrett had thrown both of his touchdowns to star receiver Mark Roberts before collapsing.
Several WO-S players dropped to one knee as medics tended to Garrett. Other players put their arms around each other as the stadium fell silent. Medics slowly removed Garrett's shoulder pads and jersey top as he lay motionless on his side.
Garrett entered the game as one of the leading passers in Southeast Texas. He had thrown for five touchdowns with one interception through two games. He also completed 20 of 34 passes for 433 yards in those

Wonder if it was another case of the kid having a genetic heart condition that wasn't diagnosed in time. Sad sad news.

In the article it said it appeared he suffered a seizure .... of course that's without an autopsy ... so it may have been completely non-sports related

It seems that 9 times out of 10 these out of the blue cases wind up getting attributed to an enlarged heart valve. The fact this kid had seizures though would point to something else, I think.

Sad story. Parents shouldn't bury their kids.

I agree that this is usually the case. Maybe school physicals should include a test to check these kids heart before participation. I know these tests may cost a bit, but aren't kids life worth whatever it costs.
