Calmer than you are.
I just discovered that the main waterline into my house is leaking and I get to dig up my front yard today to repair it. Having to dig up my front yard is bad enough, but I can't get my Dad over to help me with the pipes until 9 o'clock tomorrow morning. With the game being at noon, I seriously doubt that we'll be able to get everything done before game time. How's that for a nice start to a holiday weekend?

Iron - just get it all prepped with the ditch witch, perhaps you get lucky and a couple of cuts gets you to the point were you can splice the new connection. (Is your lead-in pipe from well iron or PVC BTW, guess the former is harder to fix, you'd need collars and such like, whereas the latter would just take standard glue and PVC prep).

Anyway - here's hoping you get it all done in a couple of hours and still see those Buckeyes!

It is PVC so it shouldn't take as long. Problem is, my Dad is helping me, and he always insists on doing everything right. Which probably means replacing the whole pipe. That'll probably what my line of thinking will be when I assess how much the pipe is damaged, but damnit, I really want to watch this game.

Now it surely makes the best of sense to respect your dad's opinions but -- its a Buckeye game, the season opener. Unless that pipe is split along the axis its best to only cut and cinch together the needed sections.

Anways if it full repalcement, how long is the pipe - 'bout 40+ feet? Can you get pipe delivered today in the right length for full replacement with understanding from store that you will use or return unneeded length?

If it's PVC you shouldnt have to replace the whole line anyway. You can (and should) glue PVC joints. Cut it off , patch it up, and be done with it. I'm with whoever says, get it prepped.... find the leak, get it all prepped, when pops shows, fix it, and get yo ass inside to whach some football.

If you know where the leak is... this shouldn't take more than an hour and a half.... how the heck does a PVC pipe start leaking anyway... unless its at an elbow... or you were parking the General Lee in your yard... btw if it is an elbow, the leak was probably caused by the thrust of the water pressure... after you fix it... leave the hole open for a day to make sure you got it fixed right... then drop a bag of quickrete around it before you bury it.. .that will satbilize the joint... (You could put some rebar in there too if you are very industrious)
