I'm in grad school down here at vanderbilt, and knew that vanderbilt shouldn't have been getting anymore than 4 or 5 points, MAX (given -3 for playing on the road) ... their o-line outweighed wake's d-line by an average of 305 to 250, they've got a first team all SEC QB in cutler, a decent passing attack and some decent guys back there in the secondary. Wake never led till the 4th quarter, and even then vandy came right back and marched down the field pretty much at will. I was nervous at the end when vandy's d really started to bend, considering I had some realCash riding on vanderbilt straight up paying 3.5:1.
It was definately a great way to start off the season, and it got me to thinking ... there must be a bunch of people on this board who follow (or at the very least are aware of teams outside the big 10, and can spot really bad lines when they see them.) We should have a place where realCash wagering tips on favorable lines should go ... maybe in the "gaming" forum? haha.
seriously though, I'm not really bigtime into betting on sports, but I can spot a bad line when I see it, and don't have any problem taking advantage of bad bookmaking. That vandy line started out a couple weeks ago at +11.5 and came all the way down to +8 by gametime and even then I'd call it a bad line, but 11.5 was terrible. I felt like telling anyone who would listen to take the points ... and vandy backed it up by playing like SHIT last night and still squeeking by with a win there.
That's all well and good....but lines have nothing to do with this except for determining how many points you get. Sounds like you lucked out without knowing the actual rules :p
...I am a graduate of Vandy as well and it's hard to say what would be a good line for a Vandy squad that was supposed to be worse than last year's 1-10 team.I like the optimism, but it has been absolutely heartbreaking being a Vandy Alum. I am still having nightmares of My Junior year when we were 5-5 and found ways to lose to Georgia and Alabama despite leading the game well into the 4th.Regardless, it's been a while since I've been this happy about the outcome of a Vanderbilt football game.
No, I understand the rules of this contest, BN27 ... I knew vanderbilt had a great shot at winning straight up (that's why I made my realCash wager for them to win straightup), I was just sharing some of the thoughts that went through my head when I saw the lines.
Brutus - NYC ... this the start of my 4th year of grad school here and I've seen enough vanderbilt football to know exactly how you feel. I don't think these guys have much of a shot once the SEC season starts ... but the ACC sucks.
As a matter of fact, I'll go on the record here saying that the ACC is a very overrated conference outside of FSU, Miami, and VT. Three teams does not a conference make, and I expect some of this misinformation / bias to lead to some non-conference lines that are a few points out of place against the ACC teams. Something to chew on in the first few weeks of this upset picks ... I think I got some "bonus" points due to a bad line.
