Weekly Trivia 2009 - Won by generaladm

OK, this may be the toughest question I've asked for these contests.

Which teammate of Chic Harley, who died during an aerial attack in France during World War I, made an important contribution on a scoring play in the victory over Illinois in 1916 that was key to tOSU's first Western Conference (Big Ten) Championship?
All-American Harold Courtney

BB73 - incorrect, please wait 3 minutes before attempting to answer the same question.

Fred Norton

Correct. tOSU trailed at Illinois 6-0, facing a 4th and 3 with 1:10 left in the game. On a muddy field due to a cold rain, the play started from about the 16-yard line, although that estimate could have been off by 3 yards or so due to the muddy field wiping out the line markers. Harley scored after faking a pass and using a stiff-arm, but was near the corner of the end zone. Extra points, in those days, involved kicking the ball out from where the score occurred in the end zone back into the field of play, where it must be caught cleanly to mark a spot from which the kick could be attempted. Halfback Fred "Fritz" Norton caught the 'kick-out' near the sideline at the 22-yard line, from where Harley made the tough-angled kick to provide the winning point in the 7-6 victory. Later that year, a Wisconsin player failed to catch the kickout cleanly after the Badgers second TD with about 2 minutes left in the game, which allowed tOSU to win 14-13 and claim their first title in the conference now called the Big Ten.

EDIT - Best Buckeye, Harold Courtney was a tackle on that team (as was his brother Howard), and Harold died during the war, but his death occurred on board a ship on the way to Europe, not in an air battle in France.

The contest will return next week.

Correct - tOSU, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Penn State outrushed their conference opponents. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut on occasion. :wink2:
