A rule that I wasn’t aware of burned Wazzu at Virginia.
Virginia had just tied the game and were kicking off with 2:55 left. The return guy caught the ball at the 2, but the other deep guy had signaled for a fair catch. When the returner caught the ball, it was dead at the 2-yard line since he wasn’t the one who made the signal.
Wazzu had a false start and then from their own 1 got stuffed inside the end zone. The safety put UVA ahead and they ran out the click after the free kick.
That‘s a play every Special Teams coach needs to show in the film room so guys don’t make that mistake.
