Week 15 CFB Open Thread

That rule goes all the way back to the origins of football - rugby. I don't have a problem with it.

Fumbling into the end zone is a high risk/high reward proposition. If you recover it inbounds you get six points. The price for not doing so can't be minor.

I know, but rugby has different 'fumble' rules. You can advance the ball with a fumble. In football, you don't need to be able to advance the ball by fumbling. Just call the ball down at the point of the fumble. Right now that is the rule if the ball goes out of bounds in the field, but not in the endzone. But, if the ball goes out of bounds in the endzone, it's a turnover. That shouldn't be. A turnover should only be if the defense gets the ball.

As far as risk/reward, I don't buy folks would be tossing the ball forward in to the endzone in hopes of getting an easy score even with the current rules. When have you seen that happen? Like in the middle of the endzone where there is less chance of going out of bounds. A player getting stopped purposely fumbles forward in hopes that his teammate picks up the ball? That doesn't even happen on the field at 3rd and 1, where a fumble out of bounds isn't an automatic turnover.

Call all fumbles down at the point of the fumble, unless it's picked up by the defense, and eliminate the stupid endzone turnover rule. I know most people don't mind the rule, but they're wrong. I'm leading the charge!
