Traffic noises from Interstate 10 generally don't even make the crew at the Orange County Appraisal District office near old U.S. 90 blink.
But Tuesday's "thunderous boom" from the roadway at about 1:30 p.m. rattled the building, employees said.
Two 18-wheelers and a pickup were involved in an accident near Burton Road that killed two motorists - just four traffic lanes away from the office's front door.
Connie Curphey said she was talking on her cell phone while walking toward the appraisal district office when she heard a "pop" similar to the sound an 18-wheeler makes when a tire blows.
