I was sitting with FIFA people from South America at the game. They were appalled at the referree. The early card on Pienaar was absolutely unnecessary and the Uruguayans were falling when they weren't even touched. The FIFA folks were saying the ref in the last German game was right to award penalties for "simulating". When he red carded the goalie, they booed and they were South Americans.

No way South Africa makes it through now, just based on goal difference. Even beating the French will not be enough.

The South Africans left the venue in good spirits, especially given the disappointment.

However, I was disappointed that the South Africans didn't seem to know how really advanced folks act when their team loses. Nobody burned a couch or overturned a car. I guess folks here just have a lot to learn.

Well, I hope you haven't attempted to educate them about our cultural practices, 'cause they'd be sorely misinformed.

Burning couches and overturning cars is what we do when our team wins.
