'16 & '17 Upset Contest Winner
The first game of the knockout round, from Port Elizabeth.

Starting on Saturday in the round of 16, there are no more draws.

After two 45-minute halves, teams will now play two 15-minute overtime periods. It's NOT sudden-death (i.e., there is no 'golden goal'), so after a score in OT a team must hold the lead until the end of the second OT. If a game is still tied after that, a shootout takes place; with each team alternately taking 5 penalty kicks (PKs) from the 12-yard spot in the box against the goalkeeper. If it's still tied after 5 rounds of PKs, then each round of PKs is sudden-death after that, until one team scores in a round and the other team doesn't.
 
Actually watching this one and I'd say Uruguay just learned the downside to Marty/Tressel ball.

Regardless of sport, you simply can't stop trying to play offense once you score, it puts too much pressure on your defense to be perfect the entire game.

They'll probably still win but its as hard to watch a clearly more talented team do this to themselves in soccer as it is in football.

I don't know what to make of either of these teams. Uruguay clearly has some really skilled explosive players, particularly up front, and they came out looking like a world-class side, going up 1-0 in the 11th minute. About 25 minutes in, it almost felt like they started playing for the 1-0 win, and South Korea took over for the better part of the next 45 minutes. South Korea really doesn't have explosive, athletic, powerful players that can beat two men and score or win the ball in the air, but they are a very disciplined side that relies on ball control and moving in space. They actually remind me of a less athletic, more disciplined US team. Since they knocked in the equalizer, Uruguay has once again put the pressure on, and as I type this Suarez makes a great one-on-two move at the edge of the box and hits an absolute rocket that curved and dove right inside the outside post for a beautiful goal. That goal was completely representative of what I'm talking about: a Uruguay side characterized by explosiveness, physicality, power and individualism; a South Korean side characterized by a lack of all of those things but that is full of great tacticians that, collectively, can be dangerous after methodically lulling you to sleep.

I think the US would match up better against the South Koreans, but for the moment it looks like it will be Uruguay going through.

Just finished watching this on the DVR. Uruguay will be a tough out for any team in this tournament. They play solid defense (1 goal in 4 games), they are physical and aggressive in the midfield, and they have quality finishers up front in Suarez and Forlan.

Damn - why didn't I set up lines for Suarez and Forlan scoring? Suarez's second goal was a thing of beauty, a perfect shot of the inside of the far post - considering the wet conditions, that's one of the best goals of the tournament so far.

The ref did a decent job in this game - he was slow to card guys, but usually called fouls when they mattered. He did miss that handball in the box that may have allowed Uruguay to take a 2-0 lead. Uruguay did sit back too much for too long in the second half, but they turned it back on when they needed to.
