WC - Brazil vs Cote d'Ivoire (Sun 2:30 ET, ABC)

I thought this might be a fairly competitive game, but Cote d'Ivoire looks completely overmatched.

Fabiano got away with two handballs on that play that led to his second goal. The ref was just joking with him about it, which seems . . . strange.

I can't describe how ridiculous this game is turning. First Fabiano does his best to show that the Italians aren't the only great actors at this World Cup, and an Ivory Coast player gets a card for basically yelling at him while he's rolling on the ground in misery, and gesturing for him to get up. Then, I can only imagine in a weird sort of retaliation, a player for Ivory Coast that bumps into Kaka goes down in feigned anguish grasping at his face (which made no contact at all with the Brazilian captain). The ref is completely duped and gives Kaka his second yellow, resulting in a red that will keep him out of the next match. This is one of those areas that I think soccer absolutely MUST go to replay. This should be looked at retroactively post-game, the card on Kaka should be wiped clean, and the player from Ivory Coast that did the acting should be awarded a yellow card.

Luis Fabiano

Nets his 2nd goal of the day. Beautiful effort (got away with a slight handball as he trapped the ball on his first touch).
On his 2nd goal, Fabiano got away with 2 handballs... It was difficult to see in the live action, but I thought it looked kinda fishy when I saw it happening. It wasn't blatant (and Ivory Coast didn't even complain) but it definitely could have been called back.

Yet another reason soccer needs video replay--not to assign penalties, but to determine the winner of the best actress award for these drama queens. Maybe they could nickname it The FIFI.
This is why my love for soccer stops at the HS level. The beauty of the game is stripped by this kind of stupidity. :(

It's especially disgusting that the ridiculous farce of the call against Kaka will keep him out of the next game--what a great system! You get to blatantly lie and cause the team you're playing to be crippled against their next opponent. And here I thought vuvuzelas were gonna be the most irritating thing about this competition.

And, BTW, is it a requirement by FIFA that their refs be born the day immediately preceeding the matches they officiate? :roll2:
