After a disappointing last second loss at #3 Notre Dame on Wednesday, the 10th ranked Ohio State women’s basketball team traveled to Cincinnati today to take on the 3-3 Bearcats. Today’s game marked the fourth straight game the Buckeyes have played away from the friendly confines of the Schott but at least they were back in their home state.
Cincinnati opened the scoring with a three pointer and quickly built a 6-2 lead less than two minutes into the game. Ohio State would quickly tie it up only to watch Cinci score six straight to open up a 12-6 lead four minutes into the game. After trading baskets, OSU put together a 6 to 1 run to pull with one, 15-14, with two minutes remaining in the quarter. A Bearcat three pointer broke the run but the Buckeyes responded by scoring the final six points of the quarter to grab a 20-18 lead.
Ohio State kept the momentum going, scoring the first four points of the second quarter. The two teams would trade a few baskets before Cincinnati scored five straight to cut the OSU lead to one, 29-28, four minutes into the quarter. The Buckeyes quickly snatched back the momentum with an 8-0 run and the two teams would trade baskets for the rest of the half and Ohio State went into halftime with a 45-38 lead.
The second half started with the teams trading baskets before Ohio State put together a 10 to 2 run to extend their lead to a comfortable 62-45 with six minutes remaining in the quarter. Cincinnati would put together a few mini-runs in the quarter but could never get closer than twelve and the quarter ended with the Buckeyes up 78-58. The Bearcats never posed a threat in the fourth quarter and the Buckeyes cruised to a 105-76 win.
Ohio State shot a great 54% from the field for the game but shot a slightly lower than normal 28% from three point range; they shot a very good 90% from the charity stripe. After struggling with turnovers against Notre Dame, OSU put on a clinic in terms of taking care of and moving the ball in this one, recording 18 assists to only 8 turnovers. Defensively the Buckeyes held Cincinnati to 33% from the field but did give up 38% from outside. The Buckeyes forced 12 turnovers which they turned into 15 points. Rebounding still needs work but at least OSU held their own tonight as each team grabbed 41 boards.
Forward Shayla Cooper led Ohio State with 18 points, shooting an amazing 9 of 11 while grabbing 3 rebounds. Kelsey Mitchell and Ameryst Alston each put up 16 points. Mitchell had 5 assists and 2 steals while committing only 1 turnover; Alston was even more impressive, dishing out 9 assists while only committing one turnover. Alexa Hart added 14 points, 9 rebounds, and an impressive 5 blocks. Cait Craft and Maykayla Waterman each added 11 points whiles while Asia Doss had 9 and Kianna Holland had 8.
This was a great bounce back game for the Buckeyes after a tough loss. The team did a great job of sharing the ball and getting scoring from people other than the dynamic duo of Mitchell and Alston. In fact Alston had a very poor shooting game, going 5 of 15 from the field and 0 of 6 from outside, but not only did she still find a way to contribute, she got other people involved and the rest of the team stepped up. Mitchell and Alston are going to draw the most attention from every opponent this year and if they can distribute the ball like they did today, their teammates are going to get good scoring opportunities and defenses will have to pay more attention to everyone else, easing the pressure on the star guards.
Shayla Cooper continues to develop as a major threat and she has a mid-range jumper that is scary good. Alexa Hart has struggled in many games this season so it is nice to see her have a big game today and hopefully it helps build some confidence.
The Buckeyes will have a week off to study and prepare for finals before returning to action on Sunday, December 13th when they host North Carolina A&T. The game will tip at 2:00pm and will be available to watch on BTN Plus.
