Wayne Woodrow "Woody" Hayes (5x National Champion, OSU HOF, CFB HOF, R.I.P.)

Refs under fire ? from Woody in ?74
By Rob Oller
The Columbus Dispatch Friday September 28, 2012

Woody Hayes had no leg to stand on, but he had one to swing with, and Ohio State players ducked for cover as their amped-up coach wielded a chair leg while threatening to take back what he thought the zebras had stolen.

Controversial endings to football games are not reserved for the NFL, where replacement referees came under fire after Monday?s Seattle-Green Bay game. The college game also has faced its share of ?oopsie? moments, from the famous ?fifth down? call that allowed Colorado to defeat Missouri en route to a share of the 1990 national championship, to a certain late penalty flag thrown during the first overtime of a certain BCS national championship game played at the 2003 Fiesta Bowl.

Ohio State both has benefited and been burned by late calls, from the pass interference/defensive holding penalty against the University of Miami that gave the Buckeyes second life in the ?03 title game, to the frantic final seconds of OSU?s 16-13 loss to Michigan State in 1974, to the ?fifth quarter? game against Illinois in 1943 in which an unseen flag allowed the Buckeyes to kick a winning field goal 10 minutes after the game seemingly had ended.

It was the late loss to the Spartans 38 seasons ago in East Lansing that sent Hayes into a frenzy in the postgame locker room.

?My recollection is Woody took a wooden chair and broke off a leg like it was a match stick,? said Dick Mack, a senior offensive lineman on the ?74 team that suffered its only regular-season loss to Michigan State. ?He had (Big Ten commissioner Wayne Duke) pinned between a pillar and locker near the shower and had the chair leg in his hand. We thought he was going to take the leg and beat (Duke) up.?

Instead, Hayes simply beat up the English language.

?Woody was yelling, ?Wayne, they (bleeped) us. They (bleeped) us.? I do remember that,? Mack said.

To Woody Hayes: Ohio State, Big Ten not as you left it
Mike Lopresti, USA TODAY SportsShare
Legendary Ohio State coach Woody Hayes wouldn't recognize the college football landscape if he were alive today

November 19. 2012 - COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Let's imagine Woody Hayes on Facebook. And let's leave this on his wall.

Dear Woody,

I'm sure you know it's Ohio State-Michigan week, and I just wanted to tell you that things are a little weird around here.

You remember how this deal used to be. The Big Ten world revolved around two curmudgeons. You'd breathe fire for a few days, waiting for a crack at the heathens from up north. Then either you'd be packing for the Rose Bowl, or they would. You and Bo, the North and South Korea of college football. Back when the Big Ten actually meant ten.

Now it's Urban and Brady, and though they have as much reverence and passion for this as anyone, they don't seem to scowl as much as you fellows did. ``This is not a war, it's a game,'' Urban Meyer was saying Monday. ``But it's a very intense game.''

Woody Hayes was the coach of the OSU football team from 1951-1978.

For $1,000 a ticket, football coach Woody Hayes? legacy at Ohio State will be revisited next month.

Hayes is credited with substantial contributions to OSU, and the university plans to honor his legacy with a ?Woody and Anne Hayes Tribute Event? on Feb. 15.

The date would have marked his 100th birthday.

Hayes reigned over OSU?s football program for 28 seasons from 1951 to 1978, at least 13 more than any head coach since the program?s establishment. During that time, the Buckeyes amassed 205 wins, 61 losses and 10 ties, earning Hayes the winningest record in the 143-year history of OSU.

As head coach, Hayes was also known for facilitating 13 Big Ten championships, eight Rose Bowl appearances, five national championships and four undefeated seasons out of a sum of six for the entirety of the football program?s existence.

OSU spokeswoman Gayle Saunders said the university hopes the event will help people remember ?the Woody years,? and help people understand Hayes? impact on OSU.

?It?s a great chance for us to bring the side of Woody Hayes to the forefront that people may not have necessarily seen off the field,? she said.

Nationally recognized for his fiery temperament on the sidelines, Hayes lent his tutelage to a handful of the best-known players of the 20th century, the likes of which include Archie Griffin, a two-time Heisman Trophy winner and current president and CEO of the OSU Alumni Association.

Griffin will serve as master of ceremonies at the event.

?It?s an honor,? Griffin said. ?He?s a man that I think about each and every day of my life because of the impact he had on me as an athlete,? he said. ?Woody Hayes was a terrific coach who really cared a great deal about the university.?

Urban Meyer has a great joke about Earle Bruce and Woody Hayes

There have been some crazy stories surrounding college football in the past year that will live on for a long time. From Bobby Petrino's affair to Lane Kiffin's shenanigans at USC to Manti Te'o's fake girlfriend -- those stories are sure to remain a part of college football lore for years to come.

However, those stories come up short in the insane category when compared to a joke Ohio State coach Urban Meyer shared at a coaches convention over the weekend.

Meyer spoke for over an hour, but a story he told about former Ohio State coach Woody Hayes took the cake. Meyer said that after an Ohio State loss in his first season as an assistant with the program in 1986, Hayes, who had been fired after the 1978 season, questioned the toughness of the coaching staff.

Fair warning, there is a lot about this joke you might find offensive.

Ohio State University To Unveil Bronze Woody Hayes Statue For 100th Birthday Celebration

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State University plans to unveil an 8-foot bronze statue of Woody Hayes on Wednesday, one day before what would have been his 100th birthday.

Zanesville artist Alan Cottrill said he hopes he captured the key traits of the famed Ohio State University Buckeyes coach.

“One word – intensity,” Cottrill said. “Woody’s intensity, his will to win, his single-mindedness of purpose.”

For Cottrill, the task of creating the statue proved simple.

“Those alive when he coached, I want them to smile and remember what he was like – the winning attitude, the intensity,” Cottrill said.

The artist said he began working on the project years before being approached by the Columbus university.

“I took it upon myself to design this piece that I hoped one day would go to Ohio State,” Cottrill said.

Then a group, lead by OSU great Archie Griffin, approached him.

“Archie had to approve it, so I sent him a bronze,” Cottrill said.

Gordon Gee, Woody’s son Steve and his long time assistant also had to approve the project.

Once Cottrill received approval, the artist made the statue the full 8 feet and then cast it in bronze.

On Wednesday, the statue will be placed on a marble slab outside of the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

“It was easy for me to get the intensity, but I tried to ratchet it down a little bit and also convey some of the kindness and honorableness in with Woody conducted himself,” Cottrill said. Those that never knew him, I want them to look and say, ‘Wow, I know he was a legendary coach, but he looks intense and pretty kind.’”

Cottrill grew up and Ohio State Fan before moving to Pennsylvania.

While his children were raised in a neighboring state, they, like their father, are Buckeye fans.

Ohio State football: Bronze statue of Hayes to be unveiled today
By Tim May
The Columbus Dispatch?Wednesday February 13, 2013

For almost five years, Alan Cottrill has been staring into the eyes of a bronze-likeness of Woody Hayes, but starting about 12:30 p.m. today, that Hayes gaze will fall upon visitors to the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

A granite base for Cottrill?s 8-foot, 800-pound bronze statue of the winningest Ohio State football coach already is in place, along with an accompanying plaque. When the statue is secured, Cottrill expects observers to see the same thing he has seen for a while.

?If I had only one word to describe it, it would be intensity,? said Cottrill, 60, who formed the statue in his Zanesville, Ohio, studio. ?More than just the eyes, I?m talking about whole posture. That?s what it was about for me. ? I wanted it to convey the intelligence he had. He was incredibly bright, he had that will to win and the humanity ? he was a kind guy. His players loved him.?

Cottrill started the project about five years ago. With Ohio State planning tributes to Hayes around the 100th anniversary of his birth on Feb. 14, 1913, this week, including a fundraiser on Friday, Ohio State alumni association president Archie Griffin approached Cottrill about completing the statue.

?People are going to forget about that dinner, and they?re going to forget about those former players being there,? Cottrill said. ?But that statue to Woody Hayes, it?s going to be there for a hundred years.?
