Water Softener question

Thump said:
I live out in the country and have well water and the water is pretty hard with many minerals and quite a bit of iron.

I go through almost 320lbs. of salt a month (8- 40 lb. bags)

Just wanted to know if anyone else with a softener goes through that much salt and if mine is normal.
consult a profesional?

honestyl have little knowledge of the things, besides providing labor to move the bags.

Same here.

I grew up on city water and we still had a softener.

I can't get used to well water at all, no matter how good the softener.

To help the taste of you water try adding a whole house filter before you softener. They go for like $20 @ Lowes. Change the filter every 3-6 months. It should help.

We have a water softener (maybe 2-5 years old...not sure age because it was with the house when we bought it), and probably go through 150-200 lbs max per month.

I lived in the country when I was a kid. We had very hard water, and probably went through as much salt as you are. The difference is, there were six people living in that house, and we used a lot of softened water for laundry, dishes, and showers. I think that you're probably going to want to buy a new softener. I know that they're pretty expensive, but if you can cut your salt usage in half, that could end up saving you same cash.
