Water Softener question

Thump

Hating the environment since 1994
  • I live out in the country and have well water and the water is pretty hard with many minerals and quite a bit of iron.

I go through almost 320lbs. of salt a month (8- 40 lb. bags)

Just wanted to know if anyone else with a softener goes through that much salt and if mine is normal.

Damn, do you run all your water through it, or just your shower and washer and dryer. If I remember correctly, my parents house was plumbed so that only washer and bathrooms had the softened water.

    Washers, sinks, toilets,and shower.

Toilets b/c they get iron stains if they aren't on soft water.

The hose bibs are hard water.

I didn't know there was country in RI. My parents have a well and they don't go through anywhere near that about of salt. IIRC my dad only made me carry 6 or so bags of salt down to the basement maybe twice a year. If I have to guess I'll say that they go through 50-100 lbs of salt a month. I love city water.
Is your softener old? That might make it use more than normal. I don't really know anything so I'll shut up now.

My softener doesn't run on demand:( , it runs every 3 days whether we are home or not.

Next one will DEFINITELY be "on demand."

    Plus it's an older version.

Try adjusting how much salt it uses. Modern softeners have adjustably.
If you have a old softener, 15+ years old it might be clogged or just used up.
That's a ton of salt your using. Adjust it to use less until you don't have enough softness.
I have a Water Boss brand. Model 700. Works great. Your usage depends on your water hardness.
