Washington St +36.5 at Oregon (ov/un 69.5) Sat 3:30 ET, FSN

I've always wondered how they arrived at both figures (the spread and over/under). A 53-16 Oregon win (37 point margin) is barely over the spread and the total score (69 points) is barely under the over/under line, while a 53-17 Oregon win (36-point margin, 70-point total) is barely under the spread and over the margin. Those are the only two scores I can work out that come within 0.5 on both the spread and over/under. Does Vegas come out with their best estimate of the final score and work from there?

My impression is that they use stats to come up with a projected score for each team, and use that to set the initial numbers. After that, they slide the numbers around to balance the total wagers on each side of the lines.

Disclaimer: What follows is from spreadsheets, not opinion. It is not a recommendation for how to bet your v$.

Differential Statistical Analysis is defined in the Stats thread which is currently on the front page of the Buckeye Football board. It provides a pair of "predictions" for yards and points for each team.

Cougs: 21.5 to 21.9 points and 401 yards
Ducks: 58.3 to 60.9 points and 553 to 560 yards
