Massillon Remains Undefeated

The Massillon Tigers defeated the Warren Harding Raiders 13-0 Friday night in Massillon. Massillon improved to 8-0, while Harding suffered its sixth defeat of the season.

Warren played a great game and the future is bright for this young team. Juniors Dan Herron, Sidney Glover, Chris Rucker and Marlin Parker were impressive players and next year should see the Raiders back in the mix with the best teams in Ohio. Coach Thom McDaniels is one of the best coaches in Ohio and he had a great game plan for the Tigers. In the end, however, the Massillon talent proved to be too much for Warren.

This match up was a defensive struggle all night with neither team able to muster much offense. The game remained scoreless until late in the first half when Massillon junior Andrew Dailey blocked a Warren punt. Teammate Brian Gamble picked up the loose ball and ran into the end zone, stunning the Raiders and giving Massillon a lead they would never surrender.

Dailey and Gamble are both listed in Ohio High magazine as two of the top juniors in the state. In this game, both players showed why they are so highly ranked.

Dailey, 6-3, 210 pounds, has performed at a high level all season at safety for the Tigers. He has drawn the interest of many of the top colleges across the country receiving mail from such schools as Ohio State, Notre Dame and Michigan and has been invited to attend home games by each.

Dailey's speed and hitting ability were evident the entire game. He is a sure tackler and has the ability to cover smaller players in space. He also plays wide receiver for the Tigers.

Gamble, 6-1, 190 pounds, rarely leaves the field as he goes both ways for the Tigers. As a defensive back he covers a lot of ground and shows great tackling ability. On offense, he gained 119 yards at running back and scored the only offensive touchdown early in the fourth quarter.

Gamble is a game-breaker and is also drawing the interest of college recruiters and is also hearing from most of the top colleges in the country. He attended the Ohio State-Texas game as a guest of the Buckeyes.

On this night, Massillon's defense dominated the contest. Other key contributors were seniors Antonio James, Dirk Dickerhoof and Quentin Paulik. Tiger coach Tom Stacy was quick to mention Paulik in his post-game comments.

"Quentin is finally getting healthy and he played great," said Stacy. "He had injured his shoulder and it was bothering him although he kept playing. He made a great play on the reverse and was in their backfield all night."

When asked if the Warren effort surprised him, Stacy said not at all.

"Thom McDaniels is a great coach," said Stacy. "We knew they would be prepared to play a great game and they sure did. That has to be the best 2-6 team I've ever seen. They're going to be tough to handle next year. They really play hard. We weren't flat at all. We expected a tough game, and that's what we got. Sometimes you have to win games like this. This was a playoff-type atmosphere. It was a defensive game and that is why we play our best athletes on defense. Offensively we changed some formations at the half and it seemed to open things up a little bit."

This has been a magical season so far for the Tigers. They are coming off consecutive 4-6 seasons and the players are gaining confidence each week. In Stacy's first season as head coach, he has gained the trust of his players. Senior Brett Huffman, who has committed to play his college football at Duke spoke about the difference in the team compared to last year.

"This is like night and day," said Huffman. "This team has done a real 180. This ride has been the most fun thing in my life. The plan for the seniors was to clear our name. We know Massillon shouldn't have losing seasons and we wanted to change that. We've gotten good senior leadership and the junior class has been good also. Coach Stacy deserves most of the credit. He got started late, but he had our total respect from the start of practice. Coach Stacy has taught us to be a disciplined football team. He has made this a respectable football program again."

Andrew Dailey talked about just how tough Warren Harding was on this night.

"We knew they would play well," said Dailey. "Dan Herron might be the best running back we've seen this year. This is a great rivalry. They have such great speed and play so hard. We just knew they would be ready to come in here to try to knock us off."

Tom Stacy is proving to be the right man for the job in Tigertown. The Tigers will return to the playoffs this season after missing out the past two years. This season has seen the Tigers defeat Cincinnati Elder, Cleveland St. Ignatius and Warren Harding. The best could be yet to come. Stacy is proving that good guys can finish first and do it the right way.

There is a lot of football remaining, including a season ending meeting with rival Canton McKinley. How far can the Tigers go in 2005? That remains to be seen, but the Tigers are a fun team to watch and will be tough to beat the rest of the way.

Warren looks to bounce back
By CHRIS EASTERLING

[email protected]

EDITOR’S NOTE: This is the eighth in a 10-part series profiling the Massillon Tigers’ 2006 football opponents. Next Wednesday: Cincinnati Western Hills.

The Warren Harding Raiders didn’t need veteran head coach Thom McDaniels to tell them the 3-7 record posted in 2005 wasn’t up to the lofty standards of the program. Nor did he doubt that mark was going to linger in the minds of those players as they sweat through their offseason workouts.

“There’s no question these guys have been motivated,” McDaniels said. “We’ve spent a lot of time talking about the legacy you want to leave as an individual and as a team. The legacy the 2005 team left is not the legacy these seniors want to leave. The record didn’t reflect the talent and work ethic these guys have. They want to erase that.”

That cleansing process won’t be easy, considering the Raiders’ typically brutal slate which includes games against Cleveland Glenville, Buchtel, Youngstown Cardinal Mooney, Youngstown Ursuline, St. Ignatius and Massillon. The Tigers pay a visit to Mollenkopf Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 14.

But McDaniels feels he has the players available to navigate through those treacherous waters. That’s especially true as he looks to his senior class, which will be the heart and soul for the Raiders.

“I think the key for us will be how well our senior players perform,” McDaniels said. “We have a lot of seniors who have played a lot of football at Warren. They need to play like it.”

One of those seniors is explosive tailback Danny Herron, who has already committed to Ohio State. Herron rushed for 1,523 yards and 16 touchdowns – averaging 7.4 yards per carry – along with 216 yards and a score receiving as a junior last season.

“I think the place to begin is that Danny is so reliable and we can count on him,” McDaniels said. “There’s nothing he can’t do. He can run, he can catch, he can throw, he can tackle, he can block. We’re going to give him a chance to do all of those things.

“Our season begins with him and then works out from him. He’s such a great play on and off the field.”

Standing 5-foot-10 and 195 pounds, Herron mixes strength and speed to wreak havoc on opponents.

“The first thing that impresses me about him is he’s so explosive,” McDaniels said. “Danny’s 20-yard time could be the best 20 time I’ve coached. He’s acceleration from the two-point stance to full speed is tremendous.

“The second thing about him is how physical he is. He doesn’t dance around. He’s going to be a down-hill guy.”

Herron will be the focal point of a Raider offense which will be rather green out of the blocks. Receiver Chris Rucker, a Division I recruit as a cornerback, is the only other returning starter on the offense, although Travis Owens – the other wide receiver – did start at safety on defense.

McDaniels said the competition is wide-open to fill the five starting offensive line positions, including a couple of sophomores. There is also a competition at quarterback between senior Luke George and junior Avery Qualls.

“We have big-play potential on offense, especially if George gets the start at quarterback,” McDaniels said. “We might not be the kind of team to control the ball for a 10-play, 80-yard drive. I don’t know if that’s who we’re going to be.

“But we’re going to have big-play capabilities. When you can go 70 yards in one or two plays, that takes some of the pressure off the new guys up front.”

Another thing which may take some of the pressure off the relatively young offense, especially early on, is a defense which is as experienced as the offense is green.

“We have about seven guys back who started all season or part of the season last year,” McDaniels said of his defense. “The experience for this team is on that side of the football. It’s not a cliché, but defense is what wins it for you.

“If we can be solid on defense while we figure things out on offense, that will be a big help.”

The experience is spread out through all three levels of the Raiders’ defense. Marlin Parker (defensive end) and Ian Vasil (defensive tackle) are back along the line, while David Harsch and Tyon Flowers return at linebacker.

The secondary has three of the four spots secured by returnees. Rucker is back at cornerback, while Owens and Sidney Glover – an Indiana recruit – return at safety.

“If we’re going to have a strong suit early, it’s going to be on defense,” McDaniels said.

Solon-WGH scrimmage

Both teams were relatively even. Here's what I took out of it.

Solon- Definitely had the size advantage. WGH was successful putting pressure of the ends, but the Comets showed composer on a couple 3rd and long situations. The running game is pretty solid, although you really can't tell by looking at the stats due to sacks and bad snaps. Broke a pair of runs on the inside run drills, but was held in check for the most part. Had a lot of success with the blitz. Their kicker has one heck of a leg, converting on 3/4 long FGs. Very physical throughout. Overall, I definitely won't be surprised to see Solon playing after week 10. They have nice depth, so the Comets are going to be one to watch.

WGH- Inconsistant at times, but finished very strong. They showed a lot more intensity & emotion than last year. Like Solon, they broke a couple long runs in the inside run drill, but Solon did a nice job of swarming to the ball. Luke George looked like the best player on the field today. Made huge plays at both QB & DE, which is rare. Defensively, the Raiders laid the wood (especially in the inside run & goalline situations), but Solon converted a couple third and longs, so they'll need to work on establishing consistancy. Overall, pretty good preformance on both sides of the ball. Consistancy is an issue, but shouldn't be a big concerned once the rest of the starters are named.

Here are my stats from the game situations.

passing
Solon: 11-21, 109 yards, 1 TD
WGH: 15-22, 161 yards

rushing
Solon: 37 carries, 79 yards
WGH: 37 carries 146 yards 2 TDs

McDaniels seeks new challenge
By JOHN VARGO Tribune Chronicle

The Thom McDaniels era has come and gone.

The successful Warren G. Harding football coach gave his resignation to the Board of Education Tuesday night. It will take effect on Dec. 21.

His contract was set to expire before the year?s end.

He leaves the program after compiling a 63-21 record in seven years ? taking the Raiders to the Division I playoffs five of his seven seasons.

When his teams lost in the playoffs, it was by no means an upset.

This season, they lost to final four participant Mentor. In 2003 and ?04, they lost to St. Edward. In 2003, the Eagles advanced to the state title game. And in 2001, eventual state champion St. Ignatius defeated Harding in the Division I regional title game at the Akron Rubber Bowl.

But McDaniels best season was 2002 when the Raiders played Cincinnati Elder in a blizzard-like conditions for the state championship at Canton?s Fawcett Stadium. However, Harding fell two points short.

McDaniels felt he succeeded as the Raiders coach even though his teams did not corral in a state title.

?I would say off-the-field we surpassed some expectations as far as football players grades, getting kids in school, representing the community, doing things the right way, being a more disciplined team. We surpassed expectations off the field,? he said.

?Other than winning a state championship, which I know is the thing people expect here, we came close. We provided people with winning football. We competed against the best in Ohio. As far as public schools go, only Massillon and Harding can say that. I?m proud of what we?ve done and the games we?ve won. We?ve lost to really good people.?

Another successful public school coach is Canton McKinley?s Brian Cross, a 1970 Warren Western Reserve graduate. His name has been at the forefront as Harding?s new coach since it has been long rumored, now confirmed, that this was McDaniels? final season.

Cross? Bulldogs will play Mentor in a state semifinal Saturday.

??To be honest with you, the only interest I have right now is to finish out our season,?? he said. ??Our kids are playing extremely well. That?s the only think I?m focused on thinking about.??

Does McDaniels have any advice for his successor?

?No, I would imagine the leaders of Warren will fill them in,? he said.

Calls to athletic director Paul Trina seeking comment were not returned.

When McDaniels took the position in 2000, his draw was to the players. That?s what makes this decision so tough on the veteran coach, who led Canton McKinley to a state championship in 1997.

??That?s the toughest part,?? he said. ??The best thing about Warren, Ohio, is the kids. I said that when I got here and I still have a great feeling for them. I will continue to follow their football futures with great interest.??

One such player is senior Dan Herron, a running back who made a verbal commitment to The Ohio State University. Herron was not only one of Ohio?s best prep players to come out of the backfield, but handled himself just a gracefully beyond the turf of Mollenkopf Stadium.

??He always told us, ?There?s always people watching you. You always have to carry yourself with great character,? ?? Herron said. ??... He made sure were were not only great football players, but off-the-field people as well.??

McDaniels even used life lessons on the field. Harding bounced back from a 3-7 campaign to finish 9-4 before losing to Mentor in a regional final.

?He told us to keep fighting and we bounced back,? Herron said. ?By Week 4 or 5, we got it together. That?s from going from 2-2 to the third round of the playoffs.?

It?s that kind of coaching that has McDaniels in such demand elsewhere.

?Every year, someone is offering him a job,? Herron said. ?I don?t think he?ll have to wait too long. I hope he goes somewhere where people appreciate him. He?s a great coach.?

Look for McDaniels to pop up somewhere in the near future.

?I am a coach in search of a team,? he said. ?I?ll be a candidate wherever they are interested in Thom McDaniels. I?m confident I?ll get a position somewhere. I?m determined to coach.?

I was wondering if anyone knew the specifics of the Inkster-Warren Harding game that was originally scheduled for the 22nd of August.

I read that the game was canceled, because of some change in the Michigan Athletics Association rules. I was hoping to catch that game, but if it has truly been canceled I would appreciate it if someone could confirm. Thanks for the time.

Inkster was forced to cancel because Michigan's football season doesn't start that early this year. Now, WGH opens their season @ Shaker Heights on August 23 at 2 PM. They were put in a bad situation at the last minute, and the only way that SH would agree to play them is if it was up there. I've been following WGH all my life, and I can't remember when they opened a season on the road. That said, I just want to see some football, so I don't care where they play.

Rios has served as the head football coach for Robert S. Rogers High School in Toledo for 11 years.
